About This Club

After the webinar, continue your learning by joining the After the Interview Club to reflect and complete activities pertaining to the webinar topics. Learn from your fellow researchers about the qualitative research life cycle, starting with the design stage, data collection, analysis, interpretation, research products, and dissemination.
  1. What's new in this club
  2. Select or create a 15-minute audio recording of an interview or an event. Upload to NVivo Transcription https://portal.mynvivo.com/shop/try-transcription?plt=0.0.1.0.1&_ga=2.163472316.1400049873.1638903498-1953812370.1635287010 (15 minute trial free). Review the transcription and decide how best to structure it in the transcription editor or Word. Try focusing on how to break up the words in the transcription editor or Word. Note silences, hesitations, and the tone of voice. What codes are emerging? If you don't have audio files, you can download audio files from the Library of Congr
  3. Based on the webinar content, consider formatting techniques to enhance the meaning of the interview. Begin transcribing the interview by hand based on the techniques discussed. Transcribe two or three critical segments. Revisit the same portion of the interview and consider alternative techniques to enhance different aspects of the audio file (e.g. tone, pauses). How does this version of the transcription compare to the automatic transcription and your initial effort.
  4. I feel comfortable responding to interview questions that is premised about sharing knowledge but about personal things, i may be skeptical because i fear that it may be used to bully me emotionally in the future. However, if such experiences may help others from getting away from trouble, i may share anonymously.
  5. This is something I personally would be more cautious about now than in the past. Ways of thinking and ways of expressing oneself are highly vulnerable to contextual interpretations - based on social, political, and other factors and I have also seen many quotes or excerpts taken out of context - sometimes inadvertently because the author did not entirely understand what the interviewee was trying to so. I like to think some values and ideas are enduring but I also know that I sometimes do not express myself as clearly as I'd like. I would for certain want to review and approve any transcript
  6. Image that you are a student in an introductory qualitative research class, and you have been asked to contribute an interview that will be housed as an audio and text file on an online archive about learning qualitative analysis. Describe your likely response to this request (yes or no), and the considerations that might impact your response. (optional) - Would your response be different if the interview was about a different topic, for instance, a current or prior relationship, or your political views?
  7. Once you have a data analysis plan, you can use NVivo to organize your research project. Create folders under files that organize your literature review, data sources like interviews, focus groups, images, videos, audio files, etc. Import the resources and data into these file folders. Create a memo describing your plan and to reflect on your process. 8. This activity is from Section 1 - Data and Conceptual Options Activity 2 - Outline a written data analysis plan using a bulleted list or planning software. Emphasize what you know as well as any gaps you will fill by reading this book and engaging in other professional development. Examine your questions and assumptions. Do they match the current analysis plan? Write a brief summary that describes the alignment between questions, assumptions, data and analysis. What are some of the most important steps you might take in the nest few weeks to firm up your inquiry.
