  1. Learn how to see the context around the coded text

    Hello everyone,
During your coding process you might want to review your first round of coding to refine your codes.
In such a scenario, you would need to review the contxt around the coded text for a specific code.
In this video I tried to show how to see the context around the coded text for the code "Landscape".
I hope this will be helpful,

  2. Learn how to see spread of coding across multiple attributes

    Hello everyone,
NVivo allows you to see spread of coding accross cases and demographic variables. The Crosstab Query tool provides you spread of coding for all values of selected attributes.
However, in some instances you might want to focus on certain attributes and their values to decide next step(s) in your research.
In this video I tried to show how to use Matrix Coding Query to see number of participants for selected attribute values of interview participants.
I hope this will be helpful.

  3. Learn how to assign multiple files to a case

    Hello everyone,
If you are performing a longitudinal study with your research, you would have multiple observations/interviews of your participants performed at a certain time.
This will bring you multiple files for a specific participant.
In such a situation, you would need to follow a slightly different case creation process in Nvivo.
In this video I tried to show to how you can assign multiple files to a case so that you can create case attributes and perform queries for each participant's attribute values.
I hope this will be helpful.

  4. Learn how to find unique instances of a word in a group text search query

    Hello everyone,
In your research you might want to perform a text search query to see whether "water" and "environment" word have been mentioned within the proximity of 15 words.
To retrieve this, you can use text search query with below criteria:
    "water environment"~15
However, if you need to find the unique instances of "environment" with the same criteria (i.e. how many times "environment" has been mentioned within 15 words  proximity of "water") you would need to use the compound query instead.
In this video I tried to demonstrate how to find unique instances of a word in a group text search with compound query tool.
I hope this will be helpful.

  6. Learn how to refine your analysis with compound query

    Hello everyone,
Nvivo provides you multiple tools to allow you deep dive while analyzing your research data.
In this video I try to show how to the utilize compound query tool to refine your text search queries.
Let's say you created a word frequency query for the code Attitude>Negative and realized that participants used words like dying, bad, kill, destroy, fading, and decrease.
However you might want answer questions like:
Where female participants are talking negatively about natural environment related topics, do they use these words or not?
The compound query tool allows you to add demographic data level filtration (Gender:Female) for a text search query.
If your query has returned interesting content, you may want to save it so you can explore it further. You can save it to a code, static set, or in the Query Results folder.
Please note that you can choose how you want to store the results before you run the query—by setting your preferences on the Query Options tab in the Compound Query dialog box.
I hope this will be helpful.

  7. Learn how to import and update classification sheets

    Hello everyone,
Nvivo allows you to import classifications for your files and cases so that you can assign desired attributes at once instead of manually creating them.
In an ideal scenario, you would have your files completed and ready for the import process.
Let's say you completed and transcribed all interviews and created an excel file for your classifications.
You can first import your files and create cases, then import classifications to assign attribute values at ones to those existing files/cases.
However, it is also common that you might need perform additional interviews at a later time and you will be able to import them upon completion. Furthermore, you might want to add or update additional attributes for your data.
In both scenarios you can utilize import classification feature to create/add/update attributes for your files and cases.
In this vide I explained how to do this in both scenarios.
One thing that is critical to this process is you need to  prepare your classification as described here so that Nvivo can match existing data with the classification sheet.
I hope this will be helpful.

  9. Designing Nvivo Project for a single case study with multiple unit of analysis

    Hello everyone,
Nvivo allows you to perform data analysis for various qualitative research approaches.
In case study approach, if a research consists multiple units of analyses, Yin, Robert K. (2018) outlines an embedded case study design.
Since each embedded unit has its own different characteristics, many researchers end up creating different Nvivo projects for each of them.
In this video I tried to explain why it is a good idea to consider creating a single Nvivo project in such a scenario and how to structure it.
I attached the sample project file for your reference.
    I hope this helps,

Teamwork is quite common in many research projects.
However, it is critical to take certain points into consideration while planning your research project.
While working as a team there are two points that you would need to know during the planning phase:
    1) Nvivo product version compatibility (i.e. Nvivo 12, Nvivo R 1.6, etc)
    2) Nvivo operating system compatibility (i.e. Nvivo for Windows, Nvivo for Mac)
In this video I tried to explain the mechanics of these compatibility rules and provided best practices.
I hope this helps you all.

  12. Share your coding as a PDF file

    Hello everyone,
In Nvivo Coding stripes are colored bars that show you the codes that code the content you are viewing.
This feature also allows you to share your coding with others as a PDF file which is very useful in many scenarios such as:
    1) At the beginning of coding process to have your coding reviewed by others.
    2) Ability to reach people who does not have access to Nvivo.
    3) Allowing visually oriented people to make an initial coding review and comparison visually.
    4) Ability to see whether coders identified new codes that would be significant for the analysis and worth to add in pre-determined codes list before proceeding further in coding process.
I hope this helps you all.

  13. How to (better) format your interview data

    Hello everyone,
Nvivo allows users to import their interview data in various formats.
If research data also has demographic information such as age, gender, etc. users will need to create both cases (to represent the participants) and case classifications (to reflect demographic attribute values for each participant). The next step would be creating codes for the interview questions. These actions would require multiple levels of manual coding before starting the thematic coding process.
In this video I am suggesting a different approach to format interview data before importing them into Nvivo, which will be easier and faster way.
If you are not going to use Nvivo Transcription feature, instead of transcribing your interviews as Word files, I would suggest to put all demographic data and interview questions into a single Excel file. This way will allow you to
    1) Have your data imported as an Excel file,
    2) Create your cases
    3) Assign attribute values for each case
    4) Auto-code your interview questions
    with a single import process.
I tried to show both approaches for you to be able to compare. I attached a sample excel file for your reference.
    Hope this helps,
    Regards,

  15. See how you can deep dive into your matrix coding query results

    Hello everyone,
Matrix Coding Query in Nvivo allows you to see coding intersections between two lists of items in your project. It is also possible to save your query results as a coding matrix to keep a record of the coding in your project at a particular point in time and review your coding.
Let's say you created a Matrix Coding Query to see the attitudes of survey participants towards water quality by gender.
If you would like to see which words have been used differently by female and male participants, you can save your query results as a coding matrix then save it as a coding structure. Then, you can create a word cloud for such a comparison.
In this video I tried to explain this process.

I hope this helps you all.

  20. Do I need cases?

    Hello everyone,
In NVivo, cases are codes that represent the 'units of analysis in your research project. It is not required for all projects to create cases and case classifications. However, if you would like to analyze the variation of opinions for demographic information, such as age and gender, then it is a good idea to create cases and assign attribute values to them.
In this video, I try to explain the rationale behind why researchers decided to create cases and assign attribute values through case classifications. Then, explained how we use this information to perform queries for answering questions like:

How do attitudes vary towards commercial fishing based on participants' community?
Do opinions about economic issues differ based on age and gender?
    I hope this helps,

  21. Use Citavi and Nvivo together for your literature review

    Hello everyone,

Nvivo and Citavi allow you to adopt various strategies for your literature review.

In this video, I am describing a way that focuses on facilitating your literature review writing process. Once you collected your relevant resources for your literature review (for the whole literature review section or any sub-section) and complete reading, you create your categories to represent sections and sub-sections of your paper. These sub-sections reflect themes in your literature review process.

You can export your Citavi project and import it into Nvivo so that you can code your resources with your theme codes (and their sub-codes). Then, you can create a Framework Matrix in which you can see different conceptual approaches in a single column.

The data presented in such a Framework Matrix will be helpful while you create your Knowledge Items in your Citavi project.

    I hope this helps,

Please do share your strategies here,
