What type of query do I need....

Hi QDiddy, One option you can try is to use a matrix coding query and set the cell content to display coding presence. See this link for more detail on display options for matrix coding queries: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/work_with_the_content_of_a_node_matrix.htm Hope this helps, ^NVivoSup

  8. Hi, Every time I try to open a tree node I get the following error message. I'm then asked to send feedback on the error to QSR before Nvivo is shut down. I'm trying to open an "top" node (with aggregated sub nodes) and turn on coding highlights to see where there are gaps in coding within in, but I can't open the node without it crashing. I've already changed the project so that it only displays in plain text, but this hasn't helped. Can you help? Thanks LMG Error Message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. 9. I'm doing some concept elicitation interviews. I have coded symptoms that people have reported and I have also coded whether these were discussed spontaneously or when probed. I would like a list of symptoms which were discussed for each for each participant, although the frequency is not important. For example I would like to know if the symptoms spontaneously discussed by participant 1 were 'headache', 'blurred vision' and 'forgetfullness'. Each symptom is a child node within 'symptoms' and 'spontaneous' and 'probed' have their own nodes. I am aware that I could run a coding query for content coded at both nodes so I could run a search for content coded at 'Symptoms' and 'Probed' and this would give me the correct content. However what I would like for each participant is a list of symptoms reported spontaneously and when probed i.e. I would like a search that would return a list of nodes. e.g. participant 1 spoke spontaneously about symptoms x y z and mentioned a b c when probed. I'm sure this must be possible but can't get my head around what I need to do... does this make sense? Any thoughts much appreciated - QD
  10. I have uploaded pdf questionnaire responses, which I have then coded. I have 5 parent nodes, all with child nodes. I’ve tried to use to the query wizard to look at overlapping themes, but it keeps saying that there are no results to show. I know that there are definite overlaps, so I’ve obviously done something wrong. Any suggestions as to what I could try? Thanks

Importing an SPSS data file - NVivo 12 Plus

Bhupesh, That helps enormously, thank you so much. I was beginning to wonder if it was something like that but given my inexperience couldn't be sure. I'm very grateful for your response as I can stop spending time going around in circles!!! Best regards, Melanie

Importing an SPSS data file - NVivo 12 Plus

Hi Mel, Currently, NVivo supports importing data directly from SPSS as a classification sheet only. This is the reason you are not prompted to choose open ended questions and you are also not able to perform any coding. To be able to choose and code open ended question, you'll need to export data from SPSS as an Excel file and import that excel file into NVivo. Refer to the link below for information on importing datasets in NVivo: https://help-nv.qsrinternational.com/12/win/v12.1.82-d3ea61/Content/files/datasets.htm I hope this helps. Kind Regards, Bhupesh

    Autocoding option is greyed

Hi Mathilde, At this stage, I am sorry to inform you that paragraph based autocoding isn't available in our Mac version. You can only Autocode by Speaker in documents. We use an easy and user-friendly online tool called Canny to gather all our customer feedback. May I request that you click on the following link https://nvivo.canny.io/ and share your feature suggestion here by creating a post. You can also vote on posts created by other users. When you post or vote on a feature, you will start receiving notification via Canny on the planned/in progress/completed actions. Kind Regards, Bhupesh

    Nvivo 12 for Mac crashing

I have similar issues. NVivo is crashing as I add more nodes and NVivo crashing as I add some new interviews (NVivo really slow to add new interviews and for some interviews I have to upload again several times (I have so far uploaded 15 interviews only) Many thanks MG
  15. I have imported a data file into NVivo 12 Plus from SPSS. The data file contains both demographic info and qualitative responses to questions for respondents organised by id number. I have two problems: 1. I have specified it as a case classification, but it doesn't ask me which questions are open-ended and which are closed-ended as per all the guidance I can find, and I'm not convinced it has formatted it correctly 2. I am unable to do any coding (a coding query is returning no results) because it doesn't seem to be recognising the qualitative data as text I'm only a novice at NVivo so I have no doubt I'm probably doing a number of things 'wrong' but I'd be grateful for some help. Here is a snip of my NVivo screen:

Document can not be saved on NVivo12 for Mac

Hello and thanks for your suggestion Bhupesh. I've also had this problem and when I followed through the steps outlined above, to create a new project and then import the old one, all my word frequency searches did not import. Is there any way of solving this issue of not everything importing when following these steps? Rebecca

    Autocoding option is greyed

Hi, I have formatted all my 12 interviews using "title 1" for research questions (RQs) and "normal" for the answers (remaining of the text). I want to run autocoding to be able to compare all 12 answers by selected RQs but the system does not allow me to do it. It only allows me to run autocoding on 1 interview (which is not useful in my case) and "per orateur" (french version of NVivo) which I don't know what it means. 1. Can I use autocoding to compare interviews per RQs 2. Could I use another function of NVivo to do a similar analysis (surely it is possible somehow) Many thanks, Mathilde Guntzberger

    Exporting Annotations + strange bug?

Hi Amir, A. You can right click on a file, click Export>Export Document and then tick 'annotations to export Annotations along with the file. You can edit the exported file if you just want to keep annotations. You can also use the following workaround export all of the annotations in your project to a single Microsoft Word file: 1. Click the 'Collections' folder 2. Select the 'All Sources' search folder under 'Search Folders' 3. Select all of the sources in the List View 'Ctrl+A' 4. Right-click on the highlighted sources and select 'Code Sources->Code Sources At New Node' 5. Select a name and location for this node and press OK This will create a node with the content of all of your sources, including their annotations. To export this file follow the steps below: 1. Right-click on the node created in step 5 above and select 'Export->Export Node' 2. Change the option in 'Export' to 'Reference View' 3. Ensure the 'Annotations' checkbox is checked 4. Press OK and specify a name and location for the exported Word file This exported node will export all of the content from that node including annotations. Now open the exported file in word and scroll down to the end of the document where the heading 'Annotations' is displayed and delete everything above it. This will leave you with a Word file that contains all the annotations in your project. Another method is to select all the annotations in a source file by pressing Ctrl key and clicking the numbers under the 'Item' column in 'Annotations'. You can then right click and press 'Copy' to copy all the annotations and then paste them into a Word or Text file outside of NVivo 11. B. This error NVivo is unable to generate a report on a large number of items(>200). You can reduce the number of items such as nodes or sources, you would like to run the report on, to fix this error. If you are running a predefined report, make sure to select and reduce the number of items to less than 200. I hope this helps. Kind Regards, Bhupesh
  19. Hello, Is there a way to export annotations from a given file or a number of files? When trying to produce a report, I get this message "at most 200 items may be selected". Any idea why? Thank you, Amir
  20. Thanks Heather, I'll give this a try and see if that works. Thanks LMG

Working with NVIVO PRO 11 in Data Safe Haven

Hi Simone, It sounds like you are working on a standalone NVivo Project. You will only see the option to add users to project groups if you are working in an NVivo Server (NVivo for Teams) project. You can still collaborate in a standalone NVivo project, but the process is different, and you will not need to assign users to project groups. There are a couple of different strategies for working as a team in a standalone project and you can find some information on these at the following link. http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/concepts/about_teamwork.htm Regards, Heather

Combining data from multiple files in one project

Thank you, Heather. Is it possible to separate the coded cases from the rest of the dataset? Other than the highlight view option, I'm not seeing how I can distinguish the coded files.
  23. Hello, I use Nvivo Pro 11 in DSH (Data Safe Haven) and was hoping that anyone has experience with that? I created a new project, which is supposed to be coded and analyzed by 3 project members (2 in the UK 1 in Uganda). We all have a DSH account. When I followed the exact instructions on the Nvivo Pro 11 glossary (online tutorial) to add members to the research project I created, I don’t have all the properties in the dialog box I need. In particular: I am supposed to have a “groups tab” – which does not appear in order to add project members. Is this so because we use Nvivo Pro 11 in DSH? If not, I'd be very grateful for any advice on how to add other coders to my project!

Combining data from multiple files in one project

Hi E’lana, it’s not possible to merge datasets in NVivo. What you might want to do instead is create cases for your participants to capture their demographic data. The easiest way to do this would be to create cases from the dataset you have already coded. You can find information on how to do this at the following link: https://help-nv.qsrinternational.com/12/mac/v12.1.72-d3ea61/Content/coding/automatic-coding-datasets.htm After you have created your cases, you can import a classification sheet to add additional demographic data. Classification sheets will need to be imported as a csv file, you may be able to modify your existing dataset in Excel and save it as a csv file to import as a classification sheet. You can find information on how your classification sheet will need to be formatted and how to import it at the following link: https://help-nv.qsrinternational.com/12/mac/v12.1.72-d3ea61/Content/classifications/classification-sheets.htm Kind regards, Heather
  25. Hi, I've recently imported a large dataset (excel spreadsheet) and coded a significant chunk. Now I need certain demographics that weren't in the original. I've added a new excel with all the info I need, but it's uncoded. Is there a way to combine these forms? I've also been reading on creating cases, that might possibly help. But in all honesty it seems confusing...Please help! E'lana
  26. Hello, One useful feature of Nvivo is that it is possible to visualize all instances of a given node within a text by clicking on the corresponding stripe in the coding stripes panel. However, when we want to go back to seeing all highlights in the text, we need to (1) click 'Highlight' and (2) 'All coding'. This seems unnecessarily convoluted and it can be quite distracting. Would it be possible to add a function whereby all highlights are brought back in one single click, for example by clicking on the 'Coding Density' bar in the coding stripes pane? A shortcut would also work. Thanks!

    Highlighting in different colors

Hear hear!! This would be an extremely useful feature! As the application stands, it is extremely hard to know where one annotated unit begins and ends. The coding stripes help to some extent, but it would make our life so much easier to be able to see different categories marked with different colors within the text. I'm attaching a screenshot from a similar tool to show what I mean. Is this feature planned at all? Thanks and best

    Carrying automatic codes between datasets

Hi, When autocoding, NVivo will compare the text content (e.g from your newly imported dataset) with the text content that has already been coded (e.g. from the previously imported dataset) to the nodes, even if from a different source. If the text content already coded to the node is similar to the text content you want to code, NVivo will code to the existing node. So, NVivo will simply compare the text coded to nodes regardless of the source it is coded from. In other words, autocoding does not occur within a specific dataset only. I hope this answers the question. Regards, Mohammad
