  1. I find the suggestion of the more efficient workflow very workable and would love this to become available. Does version 12 have such a facility? Thanks Robert
  2. Well, I have tried using Quicktime, MP3 converters and tried to import sound files (wav or MP3) either directly or after saving in default mode into Nvivo for Mac 11, but alas nothing seems to want to import. Indeed if I tell Nvivo to go pick up some video files it dutifully greys out all wav files and if I tell it to import audio files, it greys out the .mov files (but not .wav or .mp3). The log keeps telling the media is an unrecognised format..... I am not getting any further here....looking for help how I might resolve this. I have tried the suggestions above from the QSR support specialist. Kind regards, Robert
  3. Hi, I would like to limit the sources displayed in an Explore Diagram by setting a certain attribute value (say I only want to see the papers in a reference collection of a certain year that all have been coded with a particular node). Is there a way to achieve this? Thanks for looking at this Regards, Robert
  4. Hi Simon, Rahul is looking into something different. Let me word the above slightly differently. If you can point me in the right direction I'll no doubt get there. I have coded some open-ended answers in a response to a survey to create 3 different codes. The answers were from a single question in a survey, say Q1 (which was also coded as a node). So now there is some content at Q1 that carries a code. What I want to see is the content of another answer (to Q2 - also a node) from all respondents for each of the codes created at Q1. In other words if I had created a node called red, blue, and green in the sources found at Q1, I would like to see all of the text that is located at Q2 that is associated with the node red coded at Q1. Rephrasing it again: if at Q2 there is text which holds what was said about the answer to Q1, I want to group all of the text at Q2 for each of the colours of Q1, so that I can code what is said at Q2, knowing which of the codes applied in Q1 Hope you can help Kind regards Robert
  5. Further to this if I try to save the project NVivo crashes !
  6. Hi Does anyone know why this happens? I tried to add stop words to my stop words list and get an error message to contact QSR support if the problem persists. Working environment: NVivo for Windows inside Parallels session on a Mac - windows 7.1, Macos Yosemite 10.10.1 I have noticed that the size of my NVP file went up dramatically from around 100Mb to 1.4 Gb last night - but I did not add any video or other large memory chewing objects. Is my nvp file possibly corrupt? Regards, Robert
  7. Apologies for the lack of a table in the sample (my excel table copied across without problems 3 rows by 5 columns) it can easily be reconstructed: persons - Aspect - reason 1 - reason 2 - reason 3 (headers) respondent 1 - global social responsibility - making a contribution to solving global problems - it is our moral duty - makes me feel good (all answers of first respondent) respondent 2 - profit making - good for my job security - causes acceptable environmental problems - I get a promotion (all answers of second respondent) sorry about the confusion Robert
  8. Hi, I have (say) 100 respondents (each a node) in a survey. They have been allowed to define another aspect in a list of aspects (codable text) and subsequently they have been allowed to advance up to 3 reasons (each a separate node as codable text). Coding of the additional aspect will lead to (say) 5 new aspects (5 new nodes). Now I need to for each of these nodes find the relevant reason(s) and code that text. Ultimately I want to see with what reasons the respondents have advanced for the 5 new aspects. How do I set this up? I have created a matrix coding in which each row is a respondent and 4 columns have 'other', 'reason1',' reason2',' reason3'. In that sense I can group them. If I were just to code the aspects and end up with 5 new nodes how do I then code the relevant reasons? Just coding the reasons without knowing what the aspect was does not help me as the reason is of course contextual to the aspect. The link between a coded new aspect (node) and the reasons for it are the respondents (nodes). The table below is meant to explain what I am trying to do. Assume for a moment that the red text is already coded and has resulted in new nodes (GSR and Profit) Persons Aspect reason 1 reason 2 reason 3 respondent 1 global social responsibility make a contribution to solving global problems it is our moral duty makes me feel good respondent 2 profit making good for my job security causes acceptable environmental problems I get a promotion clearly I would not want to mix up answers of respondent 1 with those of respondent 2. In the end when I want to code the answers of many respondents who have advanced reasons (1 2 and 3) for GSR I want to show all of the references for each respondent whose aspect was coded as GSR (without necessarily wanting to see each of the respondents). This will allow me to efficiently code all of the reasons for this aspect. I suspect I need to create new nodes using Boolean logic. Your help and consideration is much appreciated from this beginner Robert
  9. Well NVivo has done it again, just a little bit of playing using booleans (AND/OR) allowed me through the use of 'Coding' under Query to create a 'New Node' - drop down box labelled 'Preview Only' on the Query Options tab of the 'Coding Query' window. Guess it is back to the sand box to play some more...the Word Cloud looked terrific Regards, Robert case closed (won't be so trigger happy next time!)
  10. Hi, As a beginner I run into some things that are not (like much of NVivo - Chapeau!) entirely intuitive. I have imported a spreadsheet from survey monkey and auto coded all the rows and columns (respondents versus questions). In addition I have created an expanding bunch of nodes that deal with the content of my survey. Some of the questions represent two opposing poles of a statement. Through the use of a matrix coding query I can fairly simply combine all of the coding that relates to the intersection of one particular aspect (as defined by a 'content/topic' node) and a set of say three questions (also defined as nodes). I am interested in examining the word usage of one pole as against the opposite. How do I create from the matrix (one row with three columns) a single new entity that I can subject to a word frequency analysis? I have tried a number of 'intuitive' ways, but can't get it done, yet I feel there must be a simple way (that is probably why I don't see it!) Thanks for looking at this! Kindest regards, Robert
  11. Hi, just wanting to check this. I am currently working on NVivo for Windows inside Parallels on MacOs (Yosemite). The project file is stored on iCloud (for safety and back up). I have noticed, despite lots of saves that some of my work disappears. I have just gone back to a copy that I made of my project without too much trouble. The reason I want to sit on the Cloud is simple. I have a duplicate set up at home and at work (in fact all my data normally sit on a Synology server at home (except for this project at the moment), but of course would really only like one (backed up in a RAID, as well as off-site on a professional cloud service) drive where all my data reside. The trauma of losing data (having learnt it the hard way a long time ago) is such that I am never really happy to leave a project at any time on a single HD/SDD or whatever. Given that NVivo stores everything in a single file should there be any issues with NAS as a storage? Look forward to resolving why I am losing 'bits' out of my work - compensated by making a copy of the project before I leave the work. Kind regards, Robert
  12. Hi Andrew, I have provided you with the file as requested, but not heard back from you. Is there any progress on this matter? Kind regards, Robert
  13. Hi Andrew, Thanks for the suggestions. The spreadsheet option worked fine (I had already tried that). I would like to provide you with the additional information and files. These have just been submitted. Kind regards, Robert
  14. Hi, I am just getting my head around direct imports from SurveyMonkey. I tried to important form a fairly large survey (but within the limits of what can be imported) with a lot of open ended responses. In step 4, when I press Finish to import the dataset I get a message that says 'Empty Dataset - You cannot import an empty dataset'. Just to be on the safe side I tried to import another survey and this worked flawlessly (impressive!). Now I just need to get hold of the main survey data and I will be content. Just before step 4 I do get a warning that one of the column labels is more than 255 characters, which is not a worry to me. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Kind regards, Robert
