  1. You are currently providing the following nodes feature to uncode data: Analyze -> Uncode Selection At -> Existing Nodes / Recent Nodes It would be fantastic if you could add an option to uncode: 'Currently Coded Nodes' I do not think this feature would be hard for you to add, as you are already providing the function - although in a way that is hard to reach for the user, as explained below. If I select the 'Existing Nodes' option and click on the 'With Coding' tab, Nivivo provides a list of all available codes and highlights those (in a white rather than a grey background color) that are already been used for this selection. However, I use over 200 nodes in my research and it is rather time-consuming to scroll through the entire list every time I want to check which nodes have already been used for a specific selection of words. Thus, it would be fantastic if you could either add a new tab within the 'Existing Nodes' option (that lists only those nodes that are currently used to code the selection) or add an additional list, similar to the 'Recent Nodes'. Thanks and best, Tobias
  2. I’ve got an issue in NVivo around classification sheets for sources vs. nodes for a systematic review. It’s papers basically that are imported as sources (rather than interviews but in effect they can be treated the same) that have then been coded via nodes that I’ve developed. I’ve got a source classification sheet with attributes that highlight key differences in the papers such as location. What I want to do is explore the coding based on the attributes of the papers e.g. china vs. UK. I can do this via a matrix query but it’s not working in the way that I want. I don’t have node classifications as the papers are sources rather than nodes – so I can’t explore via node attributes, if that makes sense? I played with the idea of creating case nodes, but it doesn’t feel right. Any suggestions as to what I could do to compare the coding in the papers without having to create case nodes?
  3. Good Day, I am having an issue which I'm hopefully someone will be able to help me figure out. I have one source (a Word document) and two coders. Coder A uses a Mac, Coder B a PC. Because of this, the coders used the same source, but coded it separately, each determining their own nodes. When I go and merge one project into the other, I wind up with the source listed twice, the second one with a (2) on the end. I would like to have one source file where I can click and see how each coded the same paragraph. For example, click on a certain paragraph and see Coder A labeled it "approval" where Coder B labeled it "acceptance." Is there a way I can combine the two projects to get the result of one source showing the two coders? Thank you for the help!
  4. I am attempting to code an audio file. I'm able to select particular segments and code them as selections (rather than assigning codes to the entire source), but I don't seem to be able to go back and re-select those segments for coding again. When I'm working with the audio file, segments I've already selected show up as light blue bars above the player, and the codes I've already assigned to them show up in the coding stripes tab in the correct place. However, once I've gone back to listening to the file as a whole (which also seems to be difficult to do - it keeps replaying the selected section unless I drag the slider to somewhere else in the file, rather than continuing with whatever is after the selected section), I can't seem to go back and work with the segments I selected previously again. I can click on the bars, and they then show up as dark turquoise. However, when I right-click on them or try to use the Analyze tab to "code selection," this is grayed out and I can't edit the coding of the selection or assign further codes. Anyone else having this problem, or figured out what to do about it? I've attached two pictures in case this helps - the first one is of the segments as light blue bars, and the second shows one of the segments after I've clicked on it and (I think) selected it, but can't seem to work with it again. Sorry if this is a confusing description. Thanks in advance!
  5. I have a very long document of data and I'm trying to determine how two of us can determine where the other has stopped coding the data? I keep looking for a symbol that shows in the Source that a area has been coded in the dataset and what node it was coded to. I know that I can use the coding stripes to see the data represented on the side. Yet that doesn't actually correlate back to the data to show me what needs to be done. We realized that we were both doing the same things again and we need to make sure that doesn't happen again. I realize that we could report back and forth on where we start and stop but I can't imagine with the sophistication of the product that it doesn't display what has been coded. Feeling lost, Julie

    Coding video

I am coding a video, but find that the playback function gets stuck within the section I have just coded. I can't get out to keep watching the video and keep coding. How do I continue to watch beyond the section that I have coded?
  7. I am in the process of importing my dissertation data into NVivo for coding, and I have a number of photos that I have already assigned tags/keywords and descriptions to using IrfanView. Does anyone know if there's a way to import the tags/keywords as Nvivo nodes and the descriptions as Nvivo annotations, rather than redoing it all by hand? Thanks in advance!
  8. Hello, I just started using NVivo for Mac and am trying to teach it to myself. I have a couple questions regarding coding using nodes. I am coding interviews and have developed nodes to represent thematic codes and subcodes. I'd like to be able to analyze my data to assess for differences across various factors, including race, gender, etc. I developed a person classification to do this. I'd also like to analyze my data to assess for differences in participant responses across other factors such as experiences of discrimination. For example, I'd like to look at the differences in participant responses to certain questions among individuals who have experienced various forms of discrimination. If I add "experiences of discrimination" as a node classification however, I can only assign one classification to each case node. But some of my participants will have more than one kind of discrimination experience. Is it possible to create node classifications that allow us to assign more than one classification to a particular case node? If not, is it better to just create regular coding nodes for "experiences of discrimination" rather than trying to use node classifications? And if this is the case, how would I go about analyzing my data to see these differences--just use a query? I hope these questions are clear--if not please let me know! And thanks in advance for any guidance I can get!

    Spreadsheets

As far as I can tell, there is no capacity in NVIVO for Mac to import and code spreadsheets. This is a major limitation that I would like to see addressed. Much of the data I glean from other sources and the data I organize from my own research is in spreadsheet format, and I would like to be able to select cells, rows, columns, and other sections to code.

    Now what?

What do we do after we are done coding our data? How do we review the codes and download/export them for further analysis and presentation of the information either in writing or ppt.?

    Query about queries

Hello, I am using NVivo for a literature review and have imported 47 PDF sources and coded them according to emerging themes. I would like to generate a matrix that shows me all the sources and the nodes they are coded at. I can do this manually by going to each node and noting the sources on an excel spreadsheet, but I am thinking there must be a way I can generate this in NVivo, given all the data is there. Any help appreciated! Caroline
  13. I realise that you can do this via the 'print' option - but why not just have it as an export option? To do it via print - it means having a PDF printer installed. Would be much easier just to have as an export option. Also - I would like to be able to do this in a batch option. I don't want to have to go to each source individually - I would prefer to be able to tick an option that says something like 'export all sources with coding stripes' and just have Nvivo automatically save with an auto-generated name (e.g. [name][coding stripes][date])
  14. Hi all, Apologies if this is a silly question, but I am new to NVivo and haven't been able to find the answer to my problem through other channels. I have an Excel spreadsheet of survey responses (477 unique respondents, one row for each respondent), with both open-ended (free text) and closed-ended questions. I am importing the open-ended questions as codable fields and understand that I am best to import the closed-ended questions as classifying fields. However, the import wizard in NVivo is automatically assigning some of my closed-ended fields as codable fields and it will not let me change these to classifying. Does anyone know why this is, if I can change it? The closed fields I am having problems with have very long text entries (up to 20 words) and I wonder if this is part of the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks
  15. I have some survey data in which one of the questions we asked people about how their projects are funded. I have coded the column of this data by different nodes to represent the different types of funding using text search (over 2000 responses I had to automate it!) - grants, contracts, donations, etc. The responses are open-ended so sometimes they mention the word grant or funding multiple times. An example is: "We received funding from ABC and also were funded by XYZ" If I code for text search fund*, this response generates two references, but it is from one respondent/ case. How can I do the query/ coding so that it only comes up as one reference (for the whole response)? Is there any way to merge them so that it can be seen as just one reference? Hope I'm making sense and would be grateful for some help!! Thanks
  16. I apologize if this is a basic problem, but I'm having some issues with putting the content of my .pdf files into nodes. The pdf file is from a scanned document that I can't change into another format. I was unable to use the "text" option to highlight text, but could use the "region" part (albeit not over page breaks). When I highlight a portion, I can put it into a node through either drag and drop or creating a new node. However, when I highlight a different section of the same file, I seem to be unable to put it in an already existing node that already has text in it to have two highlighted sections for this node. Instead, the original section of the .pdf file is deleted, so I only have the new section of text. How can I ensure that both highlighted portions are included in the node? On what I imagine is an unrelated issue, I see that sometimes I have "15" under references for one section of text and I can't do "pdf selection" to highlight the text. Can anyone provide some advice? I'd appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
  17. Good Day, I seem to have missed a step in the import process of my survey data as I'm unable to produce certain kinds of queries and searches in my project: After revisiting my survey source data, I noticed that when I click on a participant ID# that at the bottom of the screen there are no nodes or references assigned to anyone, so I think this is where one of my problems lies. I'm not sure what to do to fix this issue? I also realized that I had not assigned the classification of "participant" (person) to any of my nodes. Does every node need to be assigned classifications or just certain ones? Another issue (which may be related to first) is when I try text searches for words I know are in my survey source data nothing comes up. I.E. when I want to search for "China", I get zero results, why is that? Any advice or help would be most appreciated! Thanks.
  18. Hi, I'm just starting to get my head around NVivo but am having trouble when I try to code data (transcripts from Focus Groups which have been linked to audio). It only happens when I go into a parent Node and try to code further into smaller child nodes. I select a line of text and click 'code to exisiting node' and the line of text flickers and extra letters from about 5 characters before that line appear and it chops off the last 5 or so characters from the end of the line. So things are getting coded but missing the end of the line of text and adding parts of the words from infront. Is this a common issue? Is it because it's linked to the audio? Can anyone help me out? Cheers!

    Coding workflow improvements

If I want to create a new code, and apply it to the text I am working with (a very common action), MAXQDA requires several actions: Ctrl-Alt-N, create new code, then click (or drag) to apply the code to highlighted text. Once text is highlighted, it should be possible to create and apply a code with one action. My recommendation would be to make the keyboard command Ctrl-Alt-Shift-N do this. This suggestion also applies to the Windows version I think.

    PDFs and coding

Hello. Since NCapture is not available or the Mac version of Nvivo, I copy-pasted some blog posts into Word files and imported these into Nvivo. For some of the documents, I had saved them as PDFs. I've been practicing coding, and while I have had no trouble selecting lines of text to code, after coding a few documents, I turned on coding stripes, and it appears that in the PDFs, the whole document has been coded as each individual code used in that document rather than just selected areas. In other words, when I click a coding stripe named "purpose statement," instead of the sentence or line that I've coded being indicated with highlighting, the entire document from start to finish appears to be coded as that node name. Likewise, the coding density indicator shows that the entire document has been coded (even when I only selected a few lines here and there). EDITED to add: I figured out what I did wrong by going to the Windows forum. I had clicked on 'New Node' or 'Existing Nodes' under 'Code Source at' instead of 'Code Selection at' in the 'Analyze' tab of the ribbon. I think I did this because the "Code Source at" icons are highlighted yellow and the "Code Selection at" buttons are light blue color and blend in more with the Nvivo interface. UGH. I've coded ten documents this morning...and now I have to uncode them. I'll leave this post here in case someone else does something this stupid. Is there any way to change the location or colors of some Nvivo features (like "code select at")?
  21. Dear QSR Forum I am very new to content analysis and NVivo. I am analysing 200 doctors letters. My supervisor is coding 20 of these for inter-rater reliability, and she is doing it by hand in excel. Because I have 200 I decided to use NVivo, however I am now stuck. How do I (Can I?) code non-instances in NVivo. For example, we want to know whether management has been discussed with the patient and she is coding it as Yes, No and Unclear. I imagine I can set up two codes for 'management discussed' and 'unclear whether it was discussed or not', but how can I code for the non-instances? Or is it a simple matter of just noting the number in the other 2 categories to calculate those left over in the non-instance category? Apologies for such a basic question. Thank you for your help ECL
  22. Hi there, I am having a problem with coding stripes. For some reason, any coding results in a stripe that extends throughout the entire document. I know this will happen if a document is coded as a node, but that's not the issue -- as soon as I code anything at all (even one word) to any node the entire document gets striped. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Greg
  23. Hello, I'm struggling to work out how to code synthesised text in framework matrices. NVivo treats this text quite differently to that in transcripts, presumably because it is already 'held' in hidden nodes, meaning I cannot select bits of text and code them to thematic nodes. Please tell me there is a way around this as coding the original transcripts would negate all the work I have done in synthesising dozens of interviews into matrices. The background to my question is this: The literature about Framework states that developing the matrix is about data management (distilling your data into compact, pragmatic categories ready for analysis), and the real conceptual interpretive work follows that. During this analysis you use the matrix as a way of scanning the data, so the matrix is a tool but it is not an end in itself. Yet the NVivo tutorials and help topics seem to either stop at the point of making a framework, or only talk about imaging functions after that. They do not explore the core task of interpretation and analysis, and the coding required to do that. Indexing data in a matrix is not coding; it is just a way of organising data. If you can't code the text in matrices, how are you meant to manage the analysis? Any advice gratefully received!
  24. Just set up NViVo after a few versions away and a lot of memory loss. So I have uploaded some data, a number of f-2-F interviews and put the questions as nodes. Listed nodes down the left and coding stripes down the middle with data in the middle - as per previous uses. Highlighted text, but to code do I really still have to click on the drop box below and scroll to the question and then click on the 'confirm'? Can I not do the intuitive thing and double click on my node list to the left with all the bright colours and stuff and have the segment appropriately coded/ Then just check the coding stripes to check its okay. You guys must have speeded the coding up since I was last using it. At the moment I am just familiarising myself again, but am going away to a off-line site next week for two weeks just to clean data and code, so want my simple process as streamline as possible before I go. As I say, I anticipate your answers will show how dumb the question was... so apologies in advance.
  25. I coded some data. I then copied the file and gave it to another coder. She coded the same source documents against the same nodes and gave the file back to me. Now what do I do? When I try to look at a coding query it asks me to compare between User Group A and User Group B. What does that mean? Regardless of what it means there is only one userid available for selection in both A and B and that is mine. I've also looked in File/Info/Project Properties and there is a tab there called Users. It only has one userid in it as well. How do I see/compare the work of the other coder? Thanks.
