  1. I am coding using the drag and drop method in which document text is highlighted and dragged to the node. Highlighting works fine, but I can't establish a pattern of why the dragging intermittently fails about half the time. When it doesn't work, the highlighted text becomes unhighlighted and starts highlighting again where I click the cursor. The best I can tell, unless I click exactly on the black text that is highlighted (not on any whitespace, even it is the space in the "O" of the text), the drag will fail. I find that I can most successfully drag the highlighted text when I click on an "
  2. When coding transcripts that are attached to audio files (some imported and some created in NVivo), the script in the window jumps around, making it very difficult to move smoothly through the transcript. For example, I'll highlight a sentence and when I release the mouse, the view will jump to a previous point in the transcript. I have to scroll down to see the sentence that I've just highlighted. Then I can right-click and code the sentence, but when I click in the transcript box after coding, the view jumps to another point in the interview and I have to scroll down to continue to code the
  3. Hi, Any advice on how to share coding of a document (currently a source) with a colleague who does not use NVivo. Is there any way of exporting the document, showing the highlighting and node coding, like you can see with 'highlighting' and 'coding stripes' when working on a source? I have managed to export the whole document with highlighting, but no codes, or exporting all the text that is coded but not the names of the nodes they are coded to. Many thanks,
  4. Hej, In terms of setting up my project, I would like to find the best approach. I want to basically establish an actor-place network - who has been where, when and why and what have they generally said. Thus far, I have created a few cases based on persons, now I wanted to created new cases based on organizations, like Harvard University, but I seem to unable to link them, i.e. code one to the other? Do I have to code places as regular nodes?? Best, SCW
  5. Hi Thanks in advance for any help provided I feel pretty lost in this endevour as NVivo has many, many options and I'm not sure which one I need to take. I have manually produced codes for each of 9 focus group sessions, which I've laid out in 9 separate excel spreadsheets. There were between 6 and 8 of the same people in each focus group. As the example below shows, each spreadsheet is therefore made up of many rows, with each row containing a name, an illustration in the next cell, with the next cell containing the code and then the next one contains a memo/note re' this illu
  6. Hello. I have imported 10 pdfs as my source data (internal source) and have gone through each pdf and coded various terms at a node (I have 100 nodes). Is it possible to find out how many times each of the 100 nodes appear across all pdfs? I am looking for something similar to below: Code No. of times code appears across all source pdfs -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. user interface 21 2. technical 17 (codes 3 to 99 excluded to be concise) 1
  7. Hi! New to NVivo, here. I have done some initial coding and have about 10 nodes. Now I want to code those nodes into fewer, broader categories. What is the best way to do that? Thank you in advance! -Yaz
  8. I am trying to code my data to themes so I can see which themes are raised and how often. That is the easy part. However I need to be able to see which of these theme nodes that I have coded to are brought up by various specific denominations of my sources. I have similar and different themes being brought up by various different denominations of my data so thus far I have coded my data to one node per theme, opposed to coding it to one node per theme per denomination of data. To divide up my data into the different denominations I have coded all of my data to at least three nodes (rural or ur
  9. Hello, I would like to some advice on counting the number of references that are coded at a particular node. I know that I can just click on the node and a count will appear for that node, but is there a way to account for cross-coded references? In other words, I would like to know how many references from my source have been coded overall, which I am having difficulty calculating because many references are coded to more than one node, so if I just count up all of the references that are coded at each node, I will inevitably end up double- or triple-counting some references. If my quest
  10. Hello. I have imported the demographics of the interviewees in accordance with the instructions http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/concepts/organize_your_demographic_data.htm#MiniTOCBookMark3 and created case nodes for each of my interviewees as instructed. When I then try to 'Explore, Chart, Coding by attribute' (for example if I want to create a chart of the age spread for a particular node) the result does not show properly - I have attached a screen shot of what comes up with some questions. If anyone could guide me what I may have done wrong I would be very grateful s
  11. When doing some matrix coding I note that the Mac version produces the Node Matrix with rows (respondent attributes) and columns (nodes), however it only supplies the raw data. It would be nice to have the percentages in there like the windows version. Cheers.
  12. I find NVivo's software quirk on drag and drop coding extremely frustrating. This quirk relates to text selection: once a section of text is selected it is intuitive to drag it quickly to the desired code, but in NVivo this doesn't work; instead the selection is dropped and a process of selecting new text begins. It seems that NVivo requires the user to click on the selected text, pause for over 1 second, and then begin the drag motion. This is painful - it doesn't seem like much but it interrupts fast working, especially when selections are dropped. Moreover, it diverges from standard log
  13. Hi, I was wondering if the community can help me understand something. I am trying to finish my thesis which involves a content analysis of a subsample of roughly 104 public comments. I developed a codebook with which myself and a second person can code these comments (codes are the child nodes of the parent node which identifies the variable I am measuring). I want to use Choen's Kappa as a measure of inter-coder reliability and from what I understand, in order to get a coefficient for one node across all sources, I do something similar to the excel sheet found at the bottom of NVivo's F
  14. Sorry folks if this is a basic question that I should know, but I'm a newbie at this. I've just imported my transcribed interviews and done some coding. I noticed that before I began there was already one coding stripe for the entire length of the document with the person's name. When I hover the cursor over it's one of my cases. All interviews or cases have this one coding stripe in place before I began. Should I leave this one or can it be deleted? What purpose does it serve? Many thanks in advance.
  15. Apologies if this is really simplistic or has been asked before... When working with PDF journal articles I can't figure out how to code across 2 pages, i.e. when you highlight a sentence at the end of one page and the sentence continues over the page, how do you highlight so that you code that sentence but without the header/page number that is usually at the top of a PDF being included in the middle (see screenshot for example). I tried uncoding but that splits the reference in two. Sorry- feel like there's a really obvious answer I am missing. Thanks!
  16. Hi, is it possible to create a simpler coding query and also visualizations of overlapping coding E.g., the explore diagram could be used to display all other nodes that are present in a selected node. this would really advance the conceptual development of an idea as it can show the presence and depth of ideas related to the selected node. Currently the only way I know how to collect overlapping coding in a systematic way for analysis is through a Group Query or through a matrix query, and neither include a visualisation. Thank you. Jennifer
  17. I am working with video data, I coded the transcript of the videos. Now I am writing up my thesis and I want to show the codes and the timeline. I use coding stripes, but since I coded the transcripts in chunks, NVivo highlights the entire chunk even though the codes only apply to a short period in the chunk. Thus it misleads the readers. Does anyone know any other way to display the codes and their corresponding duration in the timeline? Thank you.
  18. Is there any easy way to turn off the sources and references columns while coding an interview in NVIVO 11 for Windows? (see attached screenshot) They take up valuable screen space, making it more difficult to see the nodes that I am working with. If there is any easy way to turn these off while coding, it would be really helpful. Thanks for any suggestions.
  19. I have a question regarding coding the same piece of text to the same node. Let me explain: We have one artifact which approximately 90 "raters" commented on various pieces of the text. We are trying to detect which parts of the text were commented on the most so we want to show points of overlap (the "hit rate" of various portions of text) as well as distinct features of why they were noticed (for instance, did they code for grammar, syntax, content, etc.?). Example: 5 raters commented on the first sentence of the text and 3 of those were grammar corrections. Any suggestions on th
  20. Hello, We have a set of about 27 nodes and we want to find out which data (participant interviews) are coded to more than one node. We want to know which of our nodes are similar to other nodes - either overlap or complement. For example: if something is coded as a belief is it also coded as a priority and a role? or something else as well? Is the best way to do this by pulling up each node and then using coding stripes to see which nodes are similarly coded? We have ideas/assumptions based on our coding but would like to know if there is an easier way and one that is more methodological?
  21. Dear QSR team, I made the below request about a year ago, but it appears you have not had a chance to implement it, so I thought I'd restate my interest in this new (straightforward) feature: Could you please add a 'node search function' to the toolbar. You already provide this feature, but I have to use a work-around to get there. At the moment, in order to search my nodes I have to use the 'query' tab and then click on 'selected items' and then select 'nodes' to get the option to search all nodes. This is rather time consuming and could probably be fixed quite easily with a 'nodes s
  22. Hi, I imported dataset from excel file. However, I found that I cannot code selected content of the dataset source, but only code the entire source. Can I code selected content in dataset source? And how, if I can? Many thanks. joseph
  23. How do I ascertain the number of respondents whose data is coded to a certain node? My data source is in an excel spreadsheet (originally extracted from Qualtrics), where each row in the spreadsheet contains data from a different respondent. With this data and coding, there can be multiple references for a node from a single respondent. When I open a particular node and display the Dataset tab, the respondent ID (row number) is shown. Other than counting the rows, or trawling through checking for the number of multiple references from a single respondent, how do I ascertain the number
  24. Right now I’m working on a project for a professor. I uploaded 16 documents/ uncoded transcripts (labeled #1 - #16) to NVivo10 and there are 3 parent nodes that I created: A, B, C. Then I created child nodes for each subcategory of A, B, and C. For each document, I highlighted the text and then assigned it to each of the subcategory. Is there a way to use NVivo to classify how many As, Bs, and Cs ( referring to references, not sources) are there for each document?
  25. Nvivo is rather new for me. For a while I'm having trouble with comparing coding between different sources (example: interview A coming from source 1, interview B coming from source 2 in interviewer X). I wonder if it's even possible in Nvivo? The main goal is to compare the coding of the nodes for similarity. The nodes are the same for both sources. I tried cluster analysis. This doesn't seem to do the trick (too many cases). Matrix coding doesn't do the trick either. Coding comparison seems ideal, but that's only used for different users. The cases I will use, are being filtered out by
