  1. While working with a large dataset of survey comments I have been using the "Copy" and "Merge into selected Node" functions to shrink the number of nodes after auto-coding the comment data. I thought that merging in the references would bring in all unique references, but I see now that I was also duplicating references already in the node (e.g., I had a node with A, B, and C, and a node with B, C, and D. I thought after merging I would have A, B, C, and, D but I actually have A, B, B, C C, and D). Because I have thousands of comments manually uncoding is a problem. I am looking for an efficient way to remove duplicate references within each node so that I can see what my count of unique references is. Thank you for any input you have!
  2. Hi, I am using Nvivo Plus 12.6.0.959 (64 bit) with license on Windows 10 Pro 64 bit build 19042.630. When I open Nodes and click any one of the nodes to see what have I coding just now, then the software will crash and exit. I have try repair the program and try repair the nvivo project file also not use, every nvivo project file now cannot double click the Nodes. Please help, this is urgent as I cannot open any file now, I have raise many email to support but no respond at all until now. The error message is Error Message: The top/bottom margins overlap the height of the page. 3. Hi In NVivo, when we code, we get the reference numbers (the count of times a particular node was mentioned by the participants/respondents/cases). I used aggregated nodes so whatever I am coding in child nodes are getting summed up at the parent node. So the reference number for a node becomes greater than the actual respondent/participant/case numbers. How can I get a summary about the nodes, number of references and number of respondents/participants/cases attached to the nodes? My project- 1. I am working on a dataset imported into NVivo using the SurveyMoneky option. I got a number of research questions in the nodes where I am coding references into new codes under each research question. 2. My survey respondents/participants are added in the case section. 3. I got 25 references in “Need for professional development” code of question 9. There are some references from same respondent/case were added to the child nodes so the aggregated reference number is 25 while the respondent/case number is actually 18 (meaning I coded references from 18 cases/respondents). How can I get a file where I will be able to show the number of references as well as case number for all the nodes tied to the questions. Thank you so much! Israt
  4. Dear, I have 100 pdf articles in NVIVO's internal folder. How do I extract the Methodology chapter from each pdf and create a corresponding node? It would be a similar process of extracting the abstract, to then use the Query tools.

  6. So, I am in list view. I need a new PARENT node. I click create node in menu. It always tries to make it a child node of whatever was last node highlighted in list. I searched this forum and help files for "create new parent node" to no avail.
  7. I have sources that have the name of a person, say Ahmed Hamza. I have an excel spreadsheet with lots of attribute data about each person, like Ahmed Hamza. I can import the excel spreadsheet as a node classification sheet. 1) When I do this, there is a way NVivo will recognize that each entry in one column, the names, should become nodes? The process here does not specify if the column with item 1,2,... become nodes in NVivo. 2) Assuming that #1 works and now I have a classification sheet where each row is a person coded as a node and also classified as person with his attributes, here is next question. Can I then tell Nvivo to find every instance of each name and code them all at the node of that name (which is classified as a person?) For example, Ahmed Hamza is imported via #1. Now I want to make sure that wherever in my sources "Ahmed Hamza" appears, those references fall under the node I just created. Thanks!
  8. Hi I'm reviewing/combining a project with a large number of nodes, all sources in NVivo as transcribed interviews only. Project compacts down to 180MB. I've tried every optimisation trick from here : http://help-nv10.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/optimize_project_performance.htm?rhsearch=slow ...but nodes open very slowly, whether I am displaying coding stripes or not. Whether they contain 1 or 30 items. The node folder column sizing often goes funny. I am using Win 7 Pro 64-bit, 4GB RAM (and 8GB Readyboost). Any tips welcomed. There are only so many emails one can answer waiting for a node to open!
  9. Hello, I just recently bought NVivo 10 and starting to code literature for my studies. My research is focused on funerals, particularly that of an indigenous peoples in my country of interest. An example of a main node is 'funeral ritual' and a sub-node of that is 'shaving head'. Question: Is there any way that i can differentiate coding text into one node, for example shaving head', between, those from literature based on indigenous peoples in my country of interest from those who also shave heads as part of their funeral ritual around the world. Or, do i have to create another sub-node for 'shaving head (other places)'? Help!! Thanks
  10. Hello I'm trying to get a simple excel file that contains all of my nodes and reference counts but this simple task seems overly complicated and the Report Wizard is not giving me what I want, nothing close in fact. This guide is also not helpful: http://help-nv10.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/create_reports_using_the_report_wizard.htm#Use_the_Report_Wizard Why does the Export/list nodes option not do this? That function exports only the first level node title and nothing else, what purpose does that serve? I just want to see all the things I've coded thus far in a list so I can share with my advisor when we review the work. How is this done?
  11. Hi I have coded at very many nodes. I now need to find annotations that were coded at Node A, but NOT also coded at Node B. (I want to have the ones coded at A, but exclude B ) It should not matter if they at the same time are coded at node x,y,z. Any suggestions for Mac users? /GreenvalleyAnna
  12. I wish there is an automatic log of all the changes to nodes, the changes to how they are named, how they are combined or moved, etc. It will become a useful tool for people to review and explain how the coding develops.
  13. I have just finished coding a whole lot of data, but I can't seem to see all of it inside my nodes. For example one of my nodes says it has 424 references, but when I open the node it only shows me about 1/4 of these. This is the same whether I look at this node in summary or reference view. When I look at text view I can see all the sources that have been coded against this node as thumbnails. Do I have to open each one of these one by one in order to see the data? That's not very helpful for getting a sense of the whole node. Is there some way I can open the node and see the entire 424 references?
  14. I have used Nvivo to analyse 200 individual stories (i.e. 200 separate files named Story 1, Story 2…up to Story 200) from which I generated a list of codes/nodes relating to service quality (e.g. Story 1 goes “the staff was very helpful”…I would code that bit as ‘helpful staff’). After the content analysis process, c. 1500 pieces of code (i.e. nodes) were generated for the 200 stories. I have been able to export the coding scheme (alongside 'number of sources', 'number of coding references', 'aggregate'...) into Excel where I proceeded to sort the coding items into categories and subcategories. Now, I am reporting the results in tables where I have for instance, a category called “Staff Behaviour” and a sub-category “Helpful – I report that in the whole data set, say. 200 pieces of code / 15% of the total nb of codes were assigned to the “Behaviour” category and, within those 200, 50 / 4% were assigned to the “helpful” subcategory. However, I have not been able to extract into Excel the actual source references (i.e. Story 1, 2 …) associated with each code, and report those results in the tables. For instance, I have 50 “helpful” codes and 30 “friendly” codes that are part of the overall “staff behaviours” category – but I cant see if Story 1 has both an “helpful” and a “friendly” code, in which case it should be counted once only at the level of the category. So I am unable to show the % of stories associated with each category and subcategory. Would you know how to export the actual Story reference into Excel alongside the codes/nodes, and other basic information? I have tried most of the export options and i fear i may have to report this information manually...which is going to be painful since i have 1500 pieces of code which i need to associated with stories/sources! Many many thanks in advance! Fred Ponsignon
  15. Once I have created a framework matrix, e.g., ExampleMatrix, and have started filling it with case nodes as rows and nodes as columns, how can I obtain a list, or a set of all the case nodes that are used in ExampleMatrix? I know it is possible to create a search folder that would contain all case nodes used as rows in framework summaries. But how do you limit the search folder to a given framework matrix (and not all of them, because I have created more than one)? I have tried to find a suitable query, but to no avail. I thought that I could create a set with ExampleMatrix, and then create a query to find case nodes that are included in the set. But the set thus created is not searchable. I understand that I could have created a set right at the beginning, and put in that set all case nodes that I wanted to use as rows in ExampleMatrix. I did not do so (I actually ended up adding case nodes to ExampleMatrix progressively), and now I wish I could easily view a list of all my case nodes that are part of ExampleMatrix. Of course, one can see a list of case nodes included in ExampleMatrix by opening the matrix's properties, but there is not much printing or handling that you can do with it.
  16. I have been coding audio sources to an existing node. When I access the node, and try to play the segment back for any of the references, it does not play back just the coded segment; it continues to play the audio file past the coded portion. What is the correct process for coding so that it plays only the coded portion? Here are the steps I currently follow: - Listen to the audio file until I have a codable segment. Hit "pause" or "stop" - Drag my mouse to select codable segment. - Go to "Analyze", "Code Source at", "Existing node"....select node; hit Okay. Then, to play the coded segment, I go to the node, select the source from the summary tab or the audio tab. - Go to "View", "Highlight", "Coding for all nodes" and "Coding stripes", "All node coding"....it highlights the entire recording and plays past the coded portion. Please advise! Thank you.
  17. I have just realized that when I import a PDF document and code its whole content at a node, number listed under the references/number of references column does not show what it should be. To give an example; lets say I have imported a PDF document which contains 3 pages. Then I code its whole text (OCRed) at a single node. Below how it is listed: Listed view is suggesting that this PDF document contains 4 different references coded at 1 node. However that was not the case. When I inspect the node at document, at the very bottom I realize something strange: After several tries, I have figured it out. Regardless from the coding method, if you code a whole PDF document, shown number of coding references is always "number of pages+1". Although, you have already selected all text, each page is considered as a reference. Has anyone experienced the same issue before? If this is how Nvivo works when it comes to the coding of a whole PDF document. Then, we must certainly avoid from coding a whole document via single-action coding.
  18. I obviously am missing a setting somewhere. I’ve looked in the NVivo manual but can’t seem to find what I need to do. I’ve begun coding transcripts. I have a number of nodes, and most of them have at least one selection of coded text. However, I can't display the coded text. I am on the ‘reference’ tab and I believe this is where they should be displayed. When I select the text tab the thumbnail at the top confirms 9 selections, but I can’t get them to appear. What am I missing? Charlotte
