  1. Hi all, I have revived an old thread in Nvivo9/10 forum about query timeout. I have gratefully received a response from QSR helpdesk about this topic and so am sharing this in case anyone else finds it useful: Firstly, please follow the steps below to perform a Compact and Repair of your project: 1. If your project is located on a network drive, copy it to your local machine. 2. If the project is currently open, close the project via File > Close. 3. Click the File tab > Help > Compact and Repair Project. 4. At the Select Project dialog box, locate and select the project - select NVivo Projects (*.nvp) to repair a standalone project. 5. Click Open. If the issue persists, you may need to change the SQL Time out period manually by editing your configuration file. This may be a little technical. You can ask your IT support personnel to help you with this if you are unable to do this yourself. The steps are below: o Ensure NVivo 11 is closed. o Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Wordpad o Click on File -> Open. Ensure "All Documents (*.*) is selected in the 'Files of Type' dropdown menu in the Open dialog box. 1. With NVivo 11 closed, open Windows Explorer a) Right-click on the Windows Start circle -> Explore. 2. Display all hidden files and folders: a) Click on Organize -> Folder and Search Options On the 'Folder Options' dialog, click on the View tab and check 'Show hidden files and folders' option c) Click on the Apply button and click OK. 2. Navigate to the following folders: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\QSR_International1 o You should see few folders that start with NVivo.exe..... Go into the first folder and see if it has subfolder named ""2. If not, go back one level and go into the second NVivo.exe.. folder to see if it has a subfolder One of the two folders will definitely have a subfolder named ""2. Go into this subfolder ( You should see a file called user.config, double click on it to open it.(Open it with Notepad) o The 19th3 line from top in this file (or one or two lines above or below) should have something that says SqlCommandTimeout setting. The next line should have a value of 60. Change this value to a higher number like 120 or 180. o Open NVivo 11 and re-run your query. If you still get the same error. Try increasing the timeout value to a higher number. Please note changing the sqltimeout value may result in the Cancel button (when you run a query) to become unresponsive. Lastly, if you are using 32-bit NVivo 11, it will also help to switch to 64-bit version. Please refer to the link below to find whether you can install 64-bit, http://www.qsrinternational.com/support_faqs_detail.aspx?view=1189 1. Rather than going through all those steps, I found it easier to type %appdata% into my Windows Explorer and choose the right version of Nvivo from there. 2. Just to point out that this number is the version of Nvivo you're running. Your version may be different, so check this first. You can do that by going to 'File', 'Help', 'About Nvivo'. 3. It was not the 19th line for me. I just used CTRL+F to find the SqlCommandTimeout setting.
  2. Hello, I am an infrequent NVivo user, so apologies if this is an easy question but I haven't been able to find an answer on the internet anywhere. I have survey data (dataset) that I have coded to a coding structure. I am running an Extract (View = node, fields = Node/Hierarchical Name & Coding Source.Coding Reference/Coded text) to create a dataset that can be used in other software. In addition to extracting the coded text and the node that it is coded to, I would like to be able to extract the row ID that the comment has come from as an additional column. Is there a way to do this? Many thanks
  3. When trying to set spread coding to broad context for all references on a single node, NVivo crashes. Stack trace error reads "Object reference not set to an instance of an object". Seems to work fine if I set spread coding on a single reference. Similar problem when trying to set spread coding to broad when running a query, this time I just get an error box saying "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" and NVivo doesn't crash.
  4. I am analyzing Facebook posts imported to Nvivo 11 Pro via NCapture; but only want posts created with a specific date range. Can I either limit the range of posts imported or delete those I don't need within Nvivo 11? I can filter my view of each set of posts; but not remove the redundant data.
  5. Hello everybody, I am new in using NVivo 11, and I have not undertaken any training in its usage. I will try to be as detailed as possible in order to assist you in answering my question. My project deals with the discourse of parties of the Far- Right within the parliament. I aim to analyze the themes that can be found within it and the number of references within it regarding topics such as Anti European Sentiments, Attacking or Blaming the IMF, Mentioning the Failing Performance of a State Institution, etc. The picture from the nodes that I have attached belong to the analysis of the discourse of Golden Dawn, a Far Right party from Greece. My goal was to break down and analyze their disource thematically, and each node contains the number of references that they have made regarding each topic. I was wondering how I can visualize these nodes in the form of a bar graph or make a comparison between the different years. To be more specific I created a case for each year and then I coded their discourse in the nodes that I had created. I have a sum of the total references regarding each topic for every year and I was wondering how I it would be possible to visualize it further instead of simply presenting a list with the number of references and nodes. I would like to apologize for asking this question but I have not received any training regarding the usage of NVivo as I mentioned. I thank you in advance for your time and assistance. Kind regards, Miltiadis.
  6. For some reason, I can't drop text onto nodes to code them. All of my files are pdfs but I tried with a word document and it doesn't work either. If it makes a difference, I am running it on a mac using a simulator.
  7. I've inherited coded transcripts that were done in Microsoft Word. Both coders are noted by different color combinations, with the comments being the code/node. I need to import those document into NVivo to collate and organize it. If it were just a handful of transcripts, I'd just redo them myself, but there are too many. Is there any way that I can mass important and have Nvivo code automatically, based on the highlights?
  8. Hello, I would like to some advice on counting the number of references that are coded at a particular node. I know that I can just click on the node and a count will appear for that node, but is there a way to account for cross-coded references? In other words, I would like to know how many references from my source have been coded overall, which I am having difficulty calculating because many references are coded to more than one node, so if I just count up all of the references that are coded at each node, I will inevitably end up double- or triple-counting some references. If my question is unclear, please let me know, and I'd be happy to try clarifying. Thank you so much for your help. Elisabeth
  9. Each time I try to copy the project to a mac version, I get a error message, which I have continuously reported, but then it fails. I'm travelling, and my personal version is a Mac, while my office version is a PC. Is there any way to work between the two platforms?
  10. Hi, I'm hoping a knowledgable person can shed some light on this. My research team has installed Nvivo server via our university's IT-department, but when trying to save a project to the server Nvivo freezes. I've tested this across all project members' PCs, both on cabled networks and wifi, using Nvivo 11 pro, so the problem is apparently not exclusive to my PC. I'm able to store the project file locally, but Nvivo freezes when I choose to save to server. Also, Nvivo does not see the server when I'm using Nvivo off-campus, from home. Don't know if this is related to the problem, but it seems to me that there's a database problem.
  11. Hi All I'm quite new to Nvivo so apologies if this issue is answered elsewhere, my searches have so far proved fruitless. I am trying to create a matrix to compare the number of times two different types of themes are mentioned by my interview participants, in other words when 2 nodes appear in the same case. My case study is looking at an environmental policy intervention FYI. In my rows I have selected theme A - the impacts experienced, for example 'My business profits decreased' or 'Nothing changed for me' In my column I have theme B - evaluations of the project e.g. 'The project was a waste of money' or 'the project was good for the community' I want to know how many people think both 'My business profits decreased' AND 'The project was a waste of money'. I have already classified them into cases. When I run this query it only shows me when these two codes overlap in the same statement (exact same text), not when they appear in the same interview. If anyone could help me I would be forever grateful. Cheers.
  12. Crashes every time I try to either view audio properties or delete it although the stack trace is different. I have re-imported the audio file and the new one is fine, I renamed the problem source as CORRUPT using the quick edit but I cannot delete it or view full audio properties.
  13. How do I ascertain the number of respondents whose data is coded to a certain node? My data source is in an excel spreadsheet (originally extracted from Qualtrics), where each row in the spreadsheet contains data from a different respondent. With this data and coding, there can be multiple references for a node from a single respondent. When I open a particular node and display the Dataset tab, the respondent ID (row number) is shown. Other than counting the rows, or trawling through checking for the number of multiple references from a single respondent, how do I ascertain the number of respondents whose data has been coded to that particular node? Any advice is welcome!
  14. I have just bought NVivo Pro 11 for teams. we need to code per speaker- so going through every transcript coding if it is a mother or patient or healthcare professional who spoke. This is very time consuming. Is there a way to code per name? e.g. everywhere it says joe blogs, to auto code everything up until the next speaker? Without having to do it via the style?
  15. Hi there. I recently began playing with ncapture. I have successfully collected a lot of facebook data, but trying to collect post and comments from a group failed me today. I have successfully used ncapture previously with IE, but trying with a specific closed group (of which i am a member) failed today. The capture reported having collected 0 posts and 0 comments. I tried deauthorizing ncapture in facebook, and then reauthorized it, no change. Then i tried using chrome, same result. IE still seems to collect data from other public groups with no problems. Best, Jan
