I work with a lot of pdfs that contain fillable fields, and unfortunately I can't find a way in NVivo to code any of the text within the fillable fields. Does anyone know if it's possible to do this? Some of the pdfs allow me to edit the text of the fillable fields within NVivo, but not select or code it... As a workaround, I've been saving 'flat' versions of the pdfs and adding those to NVivo instead. But this is problematic when there is too much text in a fillable field (i.e. when you need to scroll within the field to view all the text) as the 'flat' pdf only includes the text that is visible without scrolling. Also, coding the region instead of the text isn't an option because I need to be able to view and query the actual text. Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi, I hope all is well. I've just started exploring NVivo 12, for potential use in some upcoming research. I note the pre-set 'text search' and 'word frequency' query tools. However, I would like to do the following: - any comments on how this might/could be carried out would be appreciated. I have a pre-set word list that I'd to run on PDF documents, with the aim of returning just the frequency of the words on my pre-set list. A (indicative) visual explanation: pre-set word list: 'wild bird', 'cat', 'dog', 'small mouse' PDF 1: cat, dog, shrimp, cow, small mouse, dog, cat, cat PDF 2: dog, dog, dog, wild bird, dolphin, Output: PDF 1: 'wild bird': 0, 'cat': 3, 'dog': 2, 'small mouse': 1 PDF 2: 'wild bird': 1, 'cat': 0, 'dog': 3, 'small mouse': 0 Thanks greatly in advance, Regards, CJB17

Hi I have a pdf open on mac nvivo 12 which I requested it start scanning for recognisable text. However yesterday the loading bar got stuck on halfway quite quickly. I left it for hours thinking it might be because the document is large yet it still did not budge. Tt did the same thing today when I tried again and the loading bar is just stuck half way. Has anyone got any ideas to fix this? Thank you!

I only recently managed to get acquainted with NVivo. My literature review praxis has thus evolved: As I read through the article, I add the needed quotations to my Nodes (I’ve created, also hear, some thematic Nodes, in reference to the main notions I’m going to use in my research). In this regard, I would have a question. Perhaps some of you can help me. As said, I’m adding all the more interesting references encountered in my readings in my Nodes. So, e.g., I have a node titled ‘Conversion’ where I add all the most interesting quotations from various authors. By opening the Node, I can thus rapidly review all the quotations accumulated. But – and here’s my question – is there any way in which I could be redirected to the exact quote on the PDF file from which the reference was extracted directly from my Node? This would be useful at the moment in which I want to actually make use of the quotation, or a part thereof, in my writing. Unfortunately, the Node review page only reports the link to title of the work from which the quote was extracted and not the exact location of the references. Many thanks, Matteo

Dear, I have 100 pdf articles in NVIVO's internal folder. How do I extract the Methodology chapter from each pdf and create a corresponding node? It would be a similar process of extracting the abstract, to then use the Query tools.

Hello, I am currently using NVivo to conduct a structured literature analysis based on bibliographic and pdf data that I imported from Zotero. It is all going very well so far and I am in the process of coding each pdf to allow a structured review. However, I was trying to reimport pdfs and basically replace a reference's attachment (in one instance I wanted to reload a converted pdf from PowerPoint and in another instance, I wanted to rotate the pdf file) - and it doesn't work. Every time when I reimport it a completely new, unreferenced item is uploaded and the old item (which I want to replace) just stays where it is. I tried to follow the steps described elsewhere on reimporting the classification sheet, which I did (again with no result) and I am worried that I will overwrite and possibly corrupt my database by doing this. It would be fantastic if you could help. (Could you also tell me what exactly happens when exporting and reimporting classification sheets? especially when possible not all the right boxes are ticked when reimporting the file? - if this could be a problem, how can I overcome it? Just upload an updated database from Zotero?) Many thanks, A

Hello, I have two questions in this post actually, but first background. I have 3 weeks of data which I took off of Twitter. I did a search for a particular hashtag and then collected on a week to week basis all the tweets that included that hashtag. I realized after the fact that I cannot collect these tweets as anything but a PDF file because they are not from the past 2 weeks. I have started going through the tweets one by one and copy and pasting data from the PDF into an excel to make it look like a dataset file taken from twitter. My questions are as follows: 1) is there a way to convert PDF datasets of Tweets into an excel file simply? 2) if not, is there an easier way to transfer the PDF data from the PDF into an excel without having to copy and paste line by line into the excel file?

Apologies if this is really simplistic or has been asked before... When working with PDF journal articles I can't figure out how to code across 2 pages, i.e. when you highlight a sentence at the end of one page and the sentence continues over the page, how do you highlight so that you code that sentence but without the header/page number that is usually at the top of a PDF being included in the middle (see screenshot for example). I tried uncoding but that splits the reference in two. Sorry- feel like there's a really obvious answer I am missing. Thanks!

Hi Team, I have many references with both endnote bibliographic data and associated .pdfs. I have been trying to import both together through the Data/FromOtherSources/Endnote wizard, and I think I am following the instructions/set up correctly from here: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/exchange_data_between_nvivo_and_reference_management_tools.htm?rhsearch=endnote&rhsyns=%20#Understand_how_files_associated_with_references_are_handled and here: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/concepts/about_document_and_pdf_sources.htm. I have also checked the Endnote file location so these should be accessible but there's a possibility this is still not right. It is important to my research that the attributes from the bibliographic data are attached to the external reference as well as the pdf so I can see how the issues and arguments in the field have developed over time. Advice appreciated, I think/hope this is something simple I've missed as it looks like this is what the wizard is set up to do. Cheers, Elizabeth G P1 EN w Att Test.xml

When I'm reading my pdf sources and coding them, the highlight color is not the same as the color for the node I've applied. They all come out yellow even though I have a coding scheme using 6 different colors. How do I make the highlighting match? If Nvivo can't do that, is it possible for nvivo to launch and external pdf editor and then reflect the changes upon save? I use the color aspect of nodes extensively but need the pdf highlighting to reflect that. Thanks!

It appears that I have a corrupt pdf document in my NVivo project, which I cannot open or delete. When I try to delete the pdf I receive an error message (see attached - 'error report 1'), and when I try to open the pdf, NVivo crashes. This is a problem because one of our team has put significant time into coding an interview transcript in the project, but I am not able merge her work into another project (I get another error - see 'error report 2') which I suspect is because of the problematic pdf. Any tips about what I can do about this would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, I am importing 138 papers in a lit review and approximately 20 of them is not imported. It says "import error code 4". Funny enough at least one file I could add when I imported it by itself - but not the second file I tried it on. What´s error 4? How to resolve the issue? /Markus

Selecting large areas of PDF text
parvanih posted a topic in NVivo 12 for Windows and Older Versions
A project my team and I are working on requires that we select large areas of text in PDF files to create case nodes. Unfortunately, we have been unable to figure out if there is a way to create an "insertion point" into the PDF files imported into NVivo, so that we can use the shift & click trick to select the text the way you can with word documents. Instead, we have had to select the text manually (which takes a really long time given NVivo's speed of processing and is prone to error). We've tried instead converting to Word files but have found that this conversion rearranges the format and puts the text out of order. Does anyone know a better method for selecting and coding large areas of PDF text? -
Using either the “Show Annotations” box or the Find bar (Command-F), I can have the pdf viewer jump to a desired page. However, as soon as I try to scroll within that page, the viewer reverts to the page I had been viewing. Stated differently, the only way I can get to a page to work with it is to scroll all the way there. This is tremendously inconvenient. Am I missing something?

I am currently using NVivo for my dissertation research. I have a relatively large set of pdf documents (406, resulting in more than 3 GB Nvivo project file) stored as Internals. I search for a particular word and get back around 19200 references in 398 of the documents. When I click on the Word tree tab, NVivo works for about 20 minutes, and when it is available, the word tree is in fact just a blank canvas. What could possibly be wrong? There is no difference whether I do it on the pdf sources or on the respective case nodes. Perhaps there is a limit on the volume of data that can be processed and displayed? Is there a possible workaround? I use the latest 64-bit version of Nvivo (10.0.638.0 SP6) on a quad-core i5-4690 processor with 16 GB or RAM. Thanks in advance for any tips, Vince

I am using NVivo for Windows with Parallels Desktop on Mac. I have just started a new project in NVivo for Windows because the Mac-Version is still limited in functions and because of the possibility to export the project later on from Windows to Mac - and I definitely prefer to work only on the Mac-Version in the future as soon as there are more functionalities available in NVivo for Mac. In order to test how it would work to export a project from Windows to Mac, I copied the project (File - Manage - Copy Project) and converted it to a Mac project. Everything appeared to work fine, but I noticed that in PDFs which have been coded before the coding stripes have disappeared. If the coding stripes of that PDF in the Windows-Version are quite colored, there aren't any coding stripes in the same PDF in the Mac-Version. There are just the node names as usual besides the Coding density, but no stripes. Also the stripe of the coding density is just white. I would be very glad if you could tell me if I am doing anything wrong. Thank you very much Emanuel This is how the PDF and the window with the coding stripes looks like in Mac:

Hello. Since NCapture is not available or the Mac version of Nvivo, I copy-pasted some blog posts into Word files and imported these into Nvivo. For some of the documents, I had saved them as PDFs. I've been practicing coding, and while I have had no trouble selecting lines of text to code, after coding a few documents, I turned on coding stripes, and it appears that in the PDFs, the whole document has been coded as each individual code used in that document rather than just selected areas. In other words, when I click a coding stripe named "purpose statement," instead of the sentence or line that I've coded being indicated with highlighting, the entire document from start to finish appears to be coded as that node name. Likewise, the coding density indicator shows that the entire document has been coded (even when I only selected a few lines here and there). EDITED to add: I figured out what I did wrong by going to the Windows forum. I had clicked on 'New Node' or 'Existing Nodes' under 'Code Source at' instead of 'Code Selection at' in the 'Analyze' tab of the ribbon. I think I did this because the "Code Source at" icons are highlighted yellow and the "Code Selection at" buttons are light blue color and blend in more with the Nvivo interface. UGH. I've coded ten documents this morning...and now I have to uncode them. I'll leave this post here in case someone else does something this stupid. Is there any way to change the location or colors of some Nvivo features (like "code select at")?

Hello, I have both the original digital recording and the typed-up transcript of the recording as a PDF format. Both are separate files. What I am wanting to do is create a link between the two files. This is not for analysis, just for housekeeping. Is this possible? If so, could you please provide me with some guidance? Cheers! Hello, When using NCapture, I understand that NVivo keeps a record of the captured webpage URL and date accessed in the attributes. I was wondering, however, if it is possible to have the URL and date/time accessed actually printed in the PDF that the webpage is created into. The reason for asking this is that some of the webpages I capture are used in papers that I write. When writing up a paper I must include in the citation the URL and date accessed. At the moment, this information is propriety to NVivo software. I want to also be able to export the webpage (as a PDF) with the above information included. It is just the same as the information that would be included when printing out a webpage from the web browser directly- whether that "print out" be a hardcopy or PDF "printout" using Primo or the default PDF print function on the Mac. Looking forward to your guidance. Cheers! Darren

Hello, I had made this request in a FaceBook post and received a response from QSR staff. However, I feel this is the proper place place to post my request and so will do so again. On the QSR website, there are "Getting Started" guides for NVivo, but what is really needed is a complete downloadable PDF reference guide to using the software. It was only recently when someone, more proficient than I am presently am, showed me some features of NVivo that I knew they they existed! These features were not mentioned, or only very briefly introduced in the Getting Started guide, yet were so important to me that I decided there on the spot I wanted to only use NVivo from now on! On FaceBook, I was told to refer to the help function in NVivo and print out the necessary pages. But what I am after is a complete reference manual that I can sit down and read to know what NVivo can do and refer to it to do it. For example, MAXQDA offer BOTH the Getting Started and Full Reference Manual at: http://www.maxqda.com/service/manuals And ATLAS.TI at: http://www.atlasti.com/manual.html This is the type of thing I am after. I understand that updates are constant, and that the manual would continually needed to be updated, but so does the Help. I also understand the tremendous amount of work involved in writing a complete reference manual, so could I suggest that the Help in the software be made available as one big PDF document that can be downloaded until a complete reference manual is written up? Please note that I am using NVvivo on a virutal XP Pro machine in Parallels on my Mac. It is only the very latest version of Parallels that finally allows you to chose to print as PDF, which is native to the Mac OS system. And you have to know what features you want to know about FIRST in order to search the Help. That is why I need a full reference manual that I can print out or have on my iPad to read. Thanking you in advance for your consideration of this request. Darren

Hi Please could you add auto coding from PDF bookmarks? This would be very useful when importing large numbers of PDFs, as the authors will often have added section headers as bookmarks - section headers are often a good way to structure documents. The coding could just be the bookmark itself in the relevant location (no text content) - or possibly an option could be to include the first 50 words following the bookmark in the document. Many thanks

A colleague and I are coding assignments from participants that include textboxes. The files are Word documents that contain inserted pictures and textboxes to explain the photographs. We can not highlight, click and drag this text to nodes. Does anyone have a solution to this issue? We have fingers crossed that we do not have to covert all documents to pdf files- help! Thank you. anne

Hi everyone: Though there are other topics about Nvivo problems in handling pdf files I preferred to open a new one because this implies a specific problem. The issue is that Nvivo doesn´t allways code the passage that I select, but sometimes ignore some of the highlighted words and also code words outside the highlighted passage. All my attempts to correct this mistakes were unsuccessful. I tried to code only the ignored words, and also to code a larger passage and later to uncode the surplus words. But it seems like Nvivo reads the words in a different sequence that the one one reads. I leave you a screenshot to illustrate this issue: I desired to code the first two words ("manera efectiva") and I selected them as part of the larger passage that ends with "international", but Nvivo wouldn´t code them. Besides, the second passage starting at paragraph 7, should end at the period but the last tree words don´t get coded along with the rest of the passage. Instead the lonely word "de", (wich I did not select) that got coded along with the preeceding passage. That´s really weird. This is just one example, but it happens in many passages. And the document has only one column. I hope this issue could be fixed in a next upgrade.
