  1. Hi! I'm new to NVivo but very excited to learn more. I have a quick question today that I hope has a very simple answer. How do I take two query results and generate some sort of comparative data between the two? I am using NVivo 10. For example, I would like to generate word frequency query results from both pre-class essays and post-class essays, and then I would like to see results about the change in word frequencies between the two. Clearly this is something that could be done manually by comparing the two query result pages, or visually by examining the word clouds generated by both inquiries, but is there any way to do this automatically with NVivo and maybe generate mathematical comparisons in the process? Thank you for any insight or advice you may be able to offer.
  2. hello, I am conducting a content analysis in a document.. The responses to my survey are single words that I can code one by one. However, there are many repeated words. That means that all those repeated words will be categorized in the same code. I wanted to know if there is a way to run a word frequency query and take all those words and put them in the same category instead of going through every single one and having to drag them into the code one by one.
  3. Hi, I am very new to Nvivo, just got the licence for Nvivo 12 a week ago. I am using it to compare competencies asked form candidates in a selection of job offers. I have more than 50 nodes (=competencies) I have created Attributes in Case classifications to specify the type of job the offer is looking for. I want to see how competencies overlap accross jobs. How can I do that ? Can queries be done between nodes and 4 attributes, each shown distinctly in the same diagram ? Thanks for your help !
  4. Version: Nvivo 11.4.3 (2084) System: OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 I'm a new Nvivo user and I am having a problem querying specific phrases in Nvivo for Mac. When I use double quotes around a phrase, it does not limit the search to that phrase. I have cleared all Stop Words, restarted Nvivo, and restarted my computer. The query still picks up isolated words inside the quotes separately from the others. In the examples, "quality of life" is a key node. Not being able to search for it directly is a huge drawback. Is there any way to solve this problem? I have tried ~ and it's gotten me close, but Boolean searching using quotes seems to me to be an elementary function, and I'm surprised it isn't working. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks! John
  5. Is it possible to automatically include linked memos in a query without having to select them as a separate project item? I want to select the internal source(s) and automatically include the linked memo in a query
  6. Hi, I'm finding that the query functionalities are (may?) be insufficient for my project's purposes. For example, I'd like to return counts of nodes where criteria from classification attributes are met. So... SELECT * from EntireProject WHERE ClassificationAttributeA = X AND ClassificationAttributeB = Y RETURN NodeCounts Yet it appears Nvivo is mostly geared toward returning text as opposed to returning counts. Is there a way of running more sophisticated queries such as COUNTS and INNER JOINS/OUTER JOINS within Nvivo? If not, is there a way to export the data so that queries could be run in a separate application, ie. Access or even Excel? Thanks, Josh
  7. I have NVIVO version 10, and have just confirmed that I am up to date on the current updates released through the website. I am having a difficult time analyzing my data: I would like to be able to have NVIVO quantify/rank common nodes found when I query for multiple nodes by attribute (For example, looking at participants' responses to several similar questions, seperatly among Black participants and among White participants). I am watching the Tutorial: Exploring your coding. In the video (Screenshot attached), and they refer you to the 'Query wizard' button. I don't have this button in my version (Screenshot attached) I am wondering if me not having this button is a big factor in why I cannot get NVIVO to do the analysis I would like. Also, if anyone is able to tell me how to have NVIVO quantify and rank common nodes found when I query for multiple nodes by attribute, I would really appreciate it. I am really looking for NVIVO to output a list (with percentages) of all the other nodes found when I query for particular nodes. Thanks! NVIVO missing button4_.pdf
  8. I have 3 sources, each representing an interview. I have coded them to around 50 nodes, which cascade into 4 parent nodes. I want to run a query which shows the nodes coded to each interviewee, in a separate column for each parent node. The query I want to run should look like this: Parent Node 1 Parent Node 2 Parent Node 3 Parent Node 3 Source 1 Node a Node b Node 3 Source 2 Source 3 I have only shown data for the first cell, but I hope you get the idea. The contents of the cell should be text, showing the names of the nodes under that parent coded for that source. I have started by creating a matrix coding query in an attempt to do this, but it seems the cell value has to be a number (i.e. I get the value 3 in place of the list, “node a, node b, node c”). I have already asked some experts and can’t get closer to an answer on this, so maybe it can’t be done, but it doesn't seem to me to be a very complicated query. I am a new Nvivo user. Any ideas?
  9. I've been doing some tinkering to see if I can construct a query to get the result I'm after but haven't been successful yet. Say I've got 4 cases and I've got 3 participants from each case. I've gone through and coded my interviews with all the participants. When I look at a node I see everything that is coded there irrespective of the case the participant is from. This is fine for cross-case analysis, but I want to also do some within-case analysis. What I want to do is to construct a query that filters out the coding from the participants from other cases and just shows me the coding from the particular case I am interested in. What I thought I'd need to do is create four coding queries, one for each case, and then run the relevant one as needed. Does anyone have some advice on how to achieve this?
  10. Hi everyone-- I'm trying to find a way to easily count and see text that I've coded with 3 different codes. In a matrix query I can cross tab 2 sets of codes but I can't find a way to look at 3 sets of codes at the same time. I need to be able to easily count (hopefully not by hand) how many documents have certain combinations of 3 codes and then see the actual text coded. Any ideas?
