  1. If your institution, like ours, pays for Microsoft Teams or Zoom automated transcription -- perhaps to help with accessibility -- you may have wondered if you can use the service to create NVivo Transcripts. We've found the Teams transcripts to be superior to other automated services. And because Teams knows the speaker names, it can automagically separate out speakers, which is really useful. Zoom does the same. But of course NVivo doesn't currently support either's transcript formats. So we've written a utility that converts the VTT files created by Teams and Zoom into a format that NVivo can import. It does some other stuff too, like combining lines together for easy coding. That's here: https://securityessentials.github.io/Teams2NVivo/ Enjoy! - Charles
  2. Hi! I am using Nvivo 12 for Mac and since the last update (12.3.0), when I open the transcription of the audio files that I did in Nvivo, the transcript entries appear in random order. E.g. the first line is 1h14'' and goes in decreasing chronological order until the middle of the document and then it starts again at 00h00' and then it jumps to 00h07' and so on... When I first transcribed the audio file and opened it again, it worked, the transcribed conversation was in chronological order. Now they are all messed up and I do not see any option in the program to sort the transcript entries by starting time or anything. Have anyone experienced the same issue? Any thoughts on how to solve this? Thank you in advance.
  3. Hi, I have an audio file with a transcript table that I imported from an rtf document. The table includes the columns Timespan, Content, and Speaker. However, the speaker column is still empty and my aim is to find an easy way to fill it in since the speaker information is already included in the content column (indicated by the first two or three characters like F1, F2, M1, M2, ...) First I thought I could solve this by autocoding, but I was thinking the wrong way around there because auto coding is of course only possible the other way around, i.e. I can assign a code to a transcript row based on what it says in the speaker column. So now I am trying to select all rows for speaker M1 by simply filtering the content column to show only those rows that contain "M1". Having selected all relevant rows, I am now looking for a way to bulk assign the value M1 to the speaker column for all of those rows in one go. How do I do that? Or is there another way to achieve this? Regards, Christoph
  4. Hello, I am a newbie using NVivo 10 for Windows for only 3 days. I encoded a lot of an audio file while waiting for a transcript to be made. I then imported the transcript, which worked just fine. I can see the "shadow coding stripes" next to the transcript, and when I click on a coding stripe in the audio timeline, it highlights the correct part of the transcript. However, when I double-click a coding stripe, it opens the "references", but they are only the time in the audio file -- it isn't showing me the words in the transcript at all. I assumed that if importing worked so well that all those coding stripes and shadow coding stripes were in synch, then the references would include the text in the transcript. I must be doing something wrong. Please help. Thanks, Bonnie
  5. I was able to add custom fields into my projects while I was using Nvivo 11 for Windows (11.0.0.317). However, with the Service Pack 1 (11.1.0.411), added fields do not appear on transcript window. I do not know anyone else has experienced the same issue, but I think there is a bug with the latest service pack update.
  6. Hi, I am using Nvivo 8 and I have some transcripts of some audios and videos to code. I made the transcripts with Microsoft Office Word without specific formatting. I imported the transcripts into Nvivo 8 as internal "document" and have coded them. I am wondering whether I can change the property of these coded internal "documents" as "transcripts" and keep my previous coding so that I can do frequency count of turn taking of specific speakers and on specific codes. Thank you Merry Chrismas Wing
  7. Hello, Sort of following on from what Mr_Tobi posted in the Mac Suggestions Forum: http://forums.qsrinternational.com/index.php?showtopic=5743 When I change the layout settings - by dragging - so Mac like - of the audio transcript layout - i.e. have the order changed to Speaker>Transcript>Start Time>End Time - save and close the project, then re-open the project, the layout is reverted back to the default Start Time>End Time>Transcript>Speaker. This is an issue for me as I prefer to have my layout with the "Speaker" in the first left-hand side column as it is easier for me when I am coding. For your reference, I have included screenshots of the changes I made and saved and then how NVivo returns to the default settings when I re-open the NVivo project. Since Mr_Tobi has pointed a similar issue, but within a different function, it seems to be an application-wide issue. Am I doing something wrong? I could not find anything in "Help" about changing the layout in the audio transcription. If this is a technical bug, could this be corrected? Oh, by the way, I really appreciate that the default setting in the Mac version of NVivo has the Time, Transcript and Speaker settings. The Mac version has one over on the Windows version. Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers! Darren

  9. Hello, When I open up NVivo and click on an audio file that has a transcript and play the audio with the "Synchronize" at the bottom left hand corner of the screen checked, the synced text is highlighted in a dark grey color. The dark grey highlighting color is so dark it is difficult to read the text. However, if I click anywhere in the transcript area, the highlighting changes to a nice light blue color which is easy on my eyes and the text now clearly visible. But the problem is that then the area of the transcript I clicked stays selected and becomes distracting. I only found this workaround in having the highlighted sync text turn to blue after clicking around all over the place. For users using this function for the first time, this may be rather jolting. To show you what is happening, I have included a screenshot of the how NVivo appears when first just playing the synchronized text and another after clicking the text which changes it to blue but leaves the text continually selected. Could you point this out to the technicians and ask for a fix? Also, could you put forward a suggestion? It would be great if the user could select a color they want to have the highlighting in. One reason, just to enhance personal preference for the user. The other, although I am not color blind, there maybe users who are. So being able to change colors for this and other features would be very welcome. Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers! Darren
  10. Hi! I am using my trial period to figure out if I should use Nvivo for my Ph.D project. My data will mainly be audio recordings of conversations and I need to transcribe a large part of the them. When I try to figure out how transcribing and coding works in Nvivo I notice that the mac version does not have the "shadow coding" function that the windows version have. Shadow coding means that if you code in the audio data, the associated transcription is also coded automatically, and vice versa. So I wonder if anyone knows if there are plans to include this function in Nvivo for mac in the future? And if people working with conversational data in Nvivo experiences this as a vital function or not? Thanks!
  11. My transcripts appear to have been typed in Word tables. When I run a query and click on the Reference or Text tabs to read through the results, the tables appear and the table text is cut off on the right side. In order to read it, I have to go back to the original source which takes a bit of time. Is there a fix for this?
  12. I have several audio recordings I've brought into nvivo. I'm importing the associated transcript for each file after making a few changes to prepare them for import. Sometimes I discover misplaced colons, etc after import, so I want to delete just the transcript, fix the problems (using the original software used to edit them outside nvivo) then reimport the corrected transcript. I can't figure out how to delete a transcript. I've been just deleting the audio recording, then reimporting the audio and then reimporting the transcript. It's a very slow process. If possible I would like to leave the original audio recording in nvivo and just delete the transcript. How can I delete just the transcript?
  13. Hi, I have recently imported a number of audio files and interview transcripts into NVivo 10. The interview transcripts are all Microsoft Word documents. I can code the transcripts with no issues whatsoever. But I was listening to an interview and noticed a mistake in the transcription, I was able to click edit and select the word to delete it, however, I could not add any text to the transcript. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I need the transcripts to be fully editable within NVivo. Kind regards, Mitch
