Hello everyone, If your research contains focus group data, you would need to create cases for each participant. In this video I explained how to create cases for each focus group participant using Nvivo's auto-code by speaker feature on a single transcription file. I hope this will be helpful. Regards,
  2. Hi, My data involves multiple sources for one person and so I have grouped the sources into cases. I'm hoping to tabulate or chart the percentage of coverage of a select number of different nodes in each of these cases (at present I can only seem to get these percentages for the individual source documents). Many thanks in advance.

Hello everyone, In Nvivo Coding stripes are colored bars that show you the codes that code the content you are viewing. This feature also allows you to share your coding with others as a PDF file which is very useful in many scenarios such as: 1) At the beginning of coding process to have your coding reviewed by others. 2) Ability to reach people who does not have access to Nvivo. 3) Allowing visually oriented people to make an initial coding review and comparison visually. 4) Ability to see whether coders identified new codes that would be significant for the analysis and worth to add in pre-determined codes list before proceeding further in coding process. I hope this helps you all. Please share your ideas using "write a review" button below. Regards,
  4. Hello everyone, In NVivo, cases represent the 'units of analysis' in your research study—for example, the people you interviewed or the communities you studied. Your project might have cases for people, places, organizations, events or other entities that you want to analyze and compare. Windows: Mac: Regards,

Hello everyone, In NVivo, cases are codes that represent the 'units of analysis in your research project. It is not required for all projects to create cases and case classifications. However, if you would like to analyze the variation of opinions for demographic information, such as age and gender, then it is a good idea to create cases and assign attribute values to them. In this video, I try to explain the rationale behind why researchers decided to create cases and assign attribute values through case classifications. Then, explained how we use this information to perform queries for answering questions like: How do attitudes vary towards commercial fishing based on participants' community? Do opinions about economic issues differ based on age and gender? I hope this helps, Regards,
  6. Dear all, I am trying to assign some cases (interviewees) to a classification (in NVivo-10 for Windows-10) and each time I do this a screen appears with the following message "Your action did not succeed due to the following error: Object reference not set to an instance or an object". Moreover, when I try manually to assign a specific case to a given classification, the program shuts down. The last time when I did similar things, it worked. Please help... Petru
  7. I am working on a qualitative project with focus group data. Each file in my project thus contains responses from multiple participants (e.g., the file "FG1" contains responses from 4 unique participants who participated in the first focus group). I created a case for each participant, and added a number of attributes (e.g., age, gender, level of education) for each participant. I then coded all participants' quotes to their relevant case (e.g., all of the times Annie spoke are coded to the case "Annie".) Then, I created analytical nodes (e.g., "trauma") and coded into these nodes directly from my cases. However, when I export my analytical nodes, none of the case names or attributes appear in my coding. Instead, every quote is simply tagged with the filename it's from. For example, a quote from Annie, who spoke in Focus group 1, appears in the exported node simply as "<Files\\Focus Group Transcripts\\Transcript, FG1>". This is not helpful, since I need to know which participant is saying what. Does anyone know how to export nodes with case names and case attributes attached to each unique quote from a focus group participant? Thank you!
  8. Hello: We have two focus groups and two coders. Both coders coded each focus group. I ran a coding comparison between Matt and Amanda, the coders. The results show that there are two cases for each participant and that the coders have 100% agreement on one and then the actual % agreement (e.g., 94%) on the other, duplicate case). Looking at Cases and Case classifications, I see one instance for each participant, as it should be. How did this happen and how can I correct? There are only two files, Focus Group 1 and Focus Group 2 and the participants were either in FG1 or FG2. Thanks, Audrey
  9. Hello, Everytime I try to open the classification sheet (formerly casebook) Nvivo (12 Pro) crashes. I read elsewhere the error may be due to a corrupted project. I did indeed convert my project recently from Nvivo11 to NVivo12. Everything else runs fine though. How can I fix this issue and how do I know my project may be corrupted? This is the error message displayed: Error Message: An item with the same key has already been added. 10. Hello, I don't seem to be able to create a Case Classification in NVivo11.4 on my Mac. The screenshot below shows that, when I click on create/classification, the only option I get is Source Classification. However, the instructions for NVivo11 for Mac say that Case Classification should appear here. Any advice? Thanks
  11. I have a dataset comprising transcripts of interviews with various health professionals (doctors, pharmacists, nurses, etc). I used auto coding to create cases for each speaker, so that the Interviewer is one case and each participant is a separate case. These cases are grouped under a (super?)case based on their role. In other words, there is a (super)case that includes all pharmacists, and sub-cases within for each individual pharmacist. I am trying to run queries, specifically word frequency but potentially any, but only on specific cases. In the instructional video for auto-coding, it said that it would be possible to do this so that the questions themselves wouldn't drive the word frequencies. While I couldn't find a video or specific instructions for how to do this, I intuited that I could choose "Selected Items" instead of "All Sources" and then select only the cases I wanted. I successfully used this approach to limit my queries to specific nodes, but when I tried cases, I ran into trouble. When I ran the query it returned no results. After weeks of trying, I eventually discovered that for one of the (super)cases, which included all the doctors, I could successfully run the query and get results. It worked whether I selected the supercase itself or the sub-cases (each individual doctors). For all other cases, however, the program says that it found no results, which makes no sense for a word frequency search! I cannot figure out why it would only work for these particular cases. I checked the settings for the case folders and they are identical. I also confirmed that the cases actually are indexing the text I intended (specifically what each participant said). And I made sure that all cases in each folder were selected each time. After messing around with settings (in the process turning off the classification and thereby losing all my attributes), I still couldn't get the other cases to work. Then, I imported more transcripts today, and then checked to see if the query would work on the new cases. It did not. In fact, now it isn't working for most of the doctors either. I'm comparing the settings for the cases that work with those that don't, and can't find any difference. Any ideas about what might be going on?
  12. Hello all. I wonder if you can help. I am trying to link sources to case classifications. Under case classifications I have a list of the interviewees with details about their gender and background. I have a number of sources - interviews (sometimes 2 files), notes, etc. The sources are coded but I wanted to run analysis seeing how noding changes depending on gender and background. To do that I'll need to link the sources to each case. How would I do that in such a way I could run an appropriate query? Thanks.
  13. Hi, I am new to NVIVO, so please bear with me if I have overseen something. I have the following problem: 10 emails imported from outlook through drag-and-drog, but as many people send answers from different accounts, I would need to merge two email adresses as they are currently treated as two seperate people. How do I do that? Thanks. SCW
  14. Hi Thanks in advance for any help provided I feel pretty lost in this endevour as NVivo has many, many options and I'm not sure which one I need to take. I have manually produced codes for each of 9 focus group sessions, which I've laid out in 9 separate excel spreadsheets. There were between 6 and 8 of the same people in each focus group. As the example below shows, each spreadsheet is therefore made up of many rows, with each row containing a name, an illustration in the next cell, with the next cell containing the code and then the next one contains a memo/note re' this illustration and the code. So, four items in a row that I need to be able to analyze and which I've now imported. I have created 8 participants (cases) in a new NVivo project and have also imported all 9 spreadsheets with some of the columns being classifying and others being codeable. I have a few questions: 1) I want to be able to code (create nodes) within each of the 9 internal documents so that I can see how the nodes change over the weeks that I conducted the focus groups. (I have done this manually with cardboard so can see there's a 'trend' over the time period and want to be able to see this electronically.) 2) I want to be able to assign a node to one of the cases (person) so that the node is 'linked' to the person who made the comment. Then I can see how the nodes changed over time and how they changed per participant. 3) I noticed that because I haven't linked a node to a case the system is assigning the same node to the same 'source' when this is not the case. If I can assign a node to a case then I won't have this problem I have thought that maybe I can make a new node folder for each of the sessions nodes - so, 9 node folders with codes from each session inside the relevant folder - what do you think of that idea? But it doesn't solve the linking of nodes to cases ..... Thank you very much in advance for your help! Delia
  15. I am trying to code my data to themes so I can see which themes are raised and how often. That is the easy part. However I need to be able to see which of these theme nodes that I have coded to are brought up by various specific denominations of my sources. I have similar and different themes being brought up by various different denominations of my data so thus far I have coded my data to one node per theme, opposed to coding it to one node per theme per denomination of data. To divide up my data into the different denominations I have coded all of my data to at least three nodes (rural or urban, after or before, and job title). So I can use a simple coding query to see all each of the different denominations of my data (for example all data that is rural, before, and management). But my issue is how can I bring up a node hierarchy that shows me all the different themes brought up by this specific denomination of my data. I need to be able to see a unique node hierarchy like this for all of my different denominations of my data. There will be over forty different themes brought up in my data so I would like a much more efficient and clear way of doing this than using a node matrix (because there are lots of empty cells in it). Using groups to do this may be useful but I cannot find a way of only allowing certain nodes to show up in a group. I am at the early stages of my project so if I need to be using a different approach to coding it is not too late for me to be using cases instead of certain nodes or something like that.
  16. I have NVivo 11.4.0 installed on my Macbook Air and I am having trouble with cases and classifications. Every step has been followed to a. create cases, b. create a case classification, c. set attribute values, and d. assign cases to the classification created. Upon following this process, I am not able to see the cases (that represent interview respondents) in the case classification sheet. I am only able to see the attributes I created. Any thoughts as to what the problem could be?
  17. Hi, I am trying to do what is explained in your help file: "Analyze the most frequently used words in a particular demographic. For example, analyze the most common words used by farmers when discussing climate change You could do a coding query to gather all content coded at climate change and at nodes with the attribute farmer—then select the result node as the criteria for the Word Frequency query." So I have 2500 email texts - cases , with attribute "type" and its values "error", "suggestion", "comment". I would like to do a word frequency just on cases where attribute type=error. First I do Query/Coding/Selected items and select Cases/My cases (all 2500 of them). Then I set criteria: Coded at/ Any case where/Survey Respondent:Type equals value Error, and use Spread to Entire Source. I do Run Query but I get all the 2500 results without any "filtering"/criteria. What am I doing wrong? Thank you Mitja
  18. I have been classifying cases for the last couple of months with no issues. Suddenly I am having an issue that I just can't seem to solve! When I create a new case, go into "Case properties" and try to classify it, I get an error message (screen capture attached) and NVivo crashes. I have tried using an old backup version of the same project and it is still happening. I don't think I have changed the case classification that seems to be causing the issues, so I am at a loss! It is clearly something to do with choosing that particular case classification, but I have many previous cases classified in that way and they all seem fine. Any advice would be awesome
  19. Hello. I'm having a lot of difficulties classifying (via autocoding, or coding manually but efficiently) respondents in a survey (and then going on to make sure the responses are matched up with the correct people). I first tried the steps outlined in the Bazeley & Jackson book (2nd edition) from page 201. I was able to import an Excel spreadsheet easily enough using the Import Dataset wizard, and that resulted in a table where I could see each case in a row, and each column represented one type of data. The Nodes detail view shows that nodes have indeed been created for each case and for each codable column. However, the values as seen in the shown in the sheet have not been matched up to each other. As I understand it, this should happen with the Classify Nodes from Dataset wizard (p. 204), but that doesn't appear to have been implemented yet in the Mac version of NVivo. I was able to assign the classification Respondent to all the cases by selecting them all and using Right-Click > Classification. However, when I try to select all the females, for example, to give them the correct value of the gender attribute, the Get Info command is dimmed out. Does that mean I have to set these attributes one by one? I tried coding thematically some of the answers in the sheet. I was able to select the text, and the nodes I created could be seen in the nodes view, but I suspect that NVivo doesn't actually know to which respondent this applies, since the detail view of the new codes just refers to the name of the spreadsheet I imported. It's a bit confusing to see an imported speadsheet with the data looking OK, but then finding (or suspecting) that it appears to be something akin to a screenshot rather than an actual table of data that the software "understands". I should note here that I'm working with a small sample of my data in order to understand the best way to proceed, so I'm very much prepared to try out anything to better understand how this whole process works. Can anyone offer any tips or information to help me make better sense of how this works? Thanks, Rick NVivo 10.2.2 for Mac
