  1. Dear all, I am trying to assign some cases (interviewees) to a classification (in NVivo-10 for Windows-10) and each time I do this a screen appears with the following message "Your action did not succeed due to the following error: Object reference not set to an instance or an object". Moreover, when I try manually to assign a specific case to a given classification, the program shuts down. The last time when I did similar things, it worked. Please help... Petru
  2. Hello, I use Nvivo 12 Pro I am trying to link each case from my classification sheet (uploaded in Excel) to the each short-answer in my data set. Both the case and the answer are well identified with an Id number. The way i've done this in the past is right clicking on each answer and code it to the respective case. It has worked in the past, when I had a limited number of cases/responses. For my current project, I have 2400 cases/responses. Doing this manually will take me an scandalous amount of time, not to mention the potential human error of erroneous coding. Does Nvivo have a way to speed up this process? A way to do this automatically? I will appreciate the help
  3. I have an open-ended question that I'd like to classify. I'm able to generate nodes that capture the main themes, however, how do I export the survey response and the node that has been assigned. Ideally I would get an Excel spreadsheet with the original response in one column and the node name assigned in the next column. I've been looking all over and can't seem to find a way to do it. Thanks.
  4. I seem to have a problem with attribute values, which should be in English but are in Chinese. A language I do not understand unfortunately.
  5. I have been classifying cases for the last couple of months with no issues. Suddenly I am having an issue that I just can't seem to solve! When I create a new case, go into "Case properties" and try to classify it, I get an error message (screen capture attached) and NVivo crashes. I have tried using an old backup version of the same project and it is still happening. I don't think I have changed the case classification that seems to be causing the issues, so I am at a loss! It is clearly something to do with choosing that particular case classification, but I have many previous cases classified in that way and they all seem fine. Any advice would be awesome
  6. Hello everyone, I am a quite new NVivo 11 Pro user. I am watching tutorials to learn more about it, however, I am having a hard time to understand classification, attributes, and matrix coding in NVivo 11 for windows. I would like to use the software for my dissertation research. In my research, I am doing university mission statement analysis. Within this context, I would like to pull out data based on degree programs, degree types, and university types. For example, I would like to compare public versus private university mission statements. Likewise, I would like to pull out the data for the same degree types and etc. I already imported my excel sheet to NVivo. I also coded the programs as public versus private, according to degree type (bachelor, master, etc). My question is how can I compare only public university and private university programs within each other and with each other. I think I should do some kind of matrix coding but I would appreciate if anyone can direct me about this issue. Kind regards,
  7. I have created a classification sheet in Excel. I believe I have assigned the Rows and Columns appropriately, but when I go to import it, it is not available to be imported. Help! Thank you! ClassificationSheet.xlsx
  8. I'm trying to automate adding classifications in my dataset. I have gone through the steps outlined in the below in the 'Classify nodes from values in a dataset' section http://help-nv10.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/classify_nodes_(set_attribute_values_to_record_information).htm? When I go to 'Classify Nodes from Dataset' I get the attached error message, 'Before classifying, you need to add at least one classification to your project'. My dataset does have classifying fields uploaded, and I have autocoded each row for each respondent. What else am I missing? With thanks, Julia
  9. Hi, I have a number of interview transcripts from interviewees who often hold more than one steady job each. Using Classficiation & Attributes only seems to allow me to put the interviewee (or source) into one or other classfication or give them one job under a 'Job' attriubute. Am I doing something wrong? What is the best way to label sources like this? Apologies for the basic question - new to NVivo! Chris Using NVivo 10
  10. Hello. I'm having a lot of difficulties classifying (via autocoding, or coding manually but efficiently) respondents in a survey (and then going on to make sure the responses are matched up with the correct people). I first tried the steps outlined in the Bazeley & Jackson book (2nd edition) from page 201. I was able to import an Excel spreadsheet easily enough using the Import Dataset wizard, and that resulted in a table where I could see each case in a row, and each column represented one type of data. The Nodes detail view shows that nodes have indeed been created for each case and for each codable column. However, the values as seen in the shown in the sheet have not been matched up to each other. As I understand it, this should happen with the Classify Nodes from Dataset wizard (p. 204), but that doesn't appear to have been implemented yet in the Mac version of NVivo. I was able to assign the classification Respondent to all the cases by selecting them all and using Right-Click > Classification. However, when I try to select all the females, for example, to give them the correct value of the gender attribute, the Get Info command is dimmed out. Does that mean I have to set these attributes one by one? I tried coding thematically some of the answers in the sheet. I was able to select the text, and the nodes I created could be seen in the nodes view, but I suspect that NVivo doesn't actually know to which respondent this applies, since the detail view of the new codes just refers to the name of the spreadsheet I imported. It's a bit confusing to see an imported speadsheet with the data looking OK, but then finding (or suspecting) that it appears to be something akin to a screenshot rather than an actual table of data that the software "understands". I should note here that I'm working with a small sample of my data in order to understand the best way to proceed, so I'm very much prepared to try out anything to better understand how this whole process works. Can anyone offer any tips or information to help me make better sense of how this works? Thanks, Rick NVivo 10.2.2 for Mac
  11. Hi, I am a new user of NVivo 10 for windows. I want to use Nvivo for qualitative analysis of around 30 interview transcripts. Most of these interviews are focus group/ multi-interviewee interviews with around 10 questions and some of the interviewees attended more than one interview. After the analysis, I may want to retrieve all of the responses from the male(female) or active(less active) interviewees for a certain question. In a transcript with 3 interviewees, how can I differentiate the interviewees in accordance with their identities (e.g., gender, level of activity, etc). Any suggestions? I read about case nodes and autocoding, but the transcripts are not formatted with “headings”. Would it still be possible for me to use “Attributes/values” in classification? If it is possible, can I retrieve the references mentioned above (with identities/attributes)? In short, how should I deal with focus group interview transcripts if I want to differentiate the identities of each interviewees in the same interview transcripts. Looking forward for your advice. Thank you.
  12. I have sources that have the name of a person, say Ahmed Hamza. I have an excel spreadsheet with lots of attribute data about each person, like Ahmed Hamza. I can import the excel spreadsheet as a node classification sheet. 1) When I do this, there is a way NVivo will recognize that each entry in one column, the names, should become nodes? The process here does not specify if the column with item 1,2,... become nodes in NVivo. 2) Assuming that #1 works and now I have a classification sheet where each row is a person coded as a node and also classified as person with his attributes, here is next question. Can I then tell Nvivo to find every instance of each name and code them all at the node of that name (which is classified as a person?) For example, Ahmed Hamza is imported via #1. Now I want to make sure that wherever in my sources "Ahmed Hamza" appears, those references fall under the node I just created. Thanks!
  13. When I select an individual Interview in the People source folder, and go to properties and try to select a classification (people), there are no classifications listed. When I go over to Node Classifications, however, Person is there, along with all the attributes (Race, age,etc.). To give more background about my file: In the Node tab there is a People subfolder, with the same titles (of interviews) as in the Source tab. In Source tab, there is a People folder, with each interview titled the same in the Node tab. However, all the Participants located in the People folder have 0 sources and 0 references. All the Nodes (in node tab) under the People folder representing the interviews have 0 sources and 0 references, while the transcripts (With the same names) located under Internals/People are showing the nodes coded. As far as I can tell, there is a problem with classifying sources and assigning the attribute values to them. Thanks! NVIVO file screenshots.doc
  14. Hello, I'm afraid I'm once again banging my head against my desktop. I'll try to explain as best I can what I'm trying to do, but if anything's unclear please ask below for further details (the answer may be in the details, after all). I have a classification of 'Value' where goods talked about can have either one of the following three attributes: 'High value', 'Medium value', and 'Low value' (not named 'budget' for consistency). I've already created a node matrix to see if any of the nodes are strongly correlated within the text. So for example, I have learnt that the node of 'staff costs' is strongly correlated with 'cost reduction' overall. I would now like to do this for each attribute (by each value of good) to see if, for example, high value goods have the 'marketing' node and the 'increased competition' node more strongly correlated than the low value goods, which may have 'market opportunity' strongly correlated with 'marketing'. Or even better, I'd like to see whether the 'staff costs' correlation with 'cost reduction' is only present in low value goods, and not in high or medium value goods. I've made the relationships up, but this is the kind of process I'm looking for Nvivo to do. Any hints? Thanks again! Julia
  15. Good Day, I seem to have missed a step in the import process of my survey data as I'm unable to produce certain kinds of queries and searches in my project: After revisiting my survey source data, I noticed that when I click on a participant ID# that at the bottom of the screen there are no nodes or references assigned to anyone, so I think this is where one of my problems lies. I'm not sure what to do to fix this issue? I also realized that I had not assigned the classification of "participant" (person) to any of my nodes. Does every node need to be assigned classifications or just certain ones? Another issue (which may be related to first) is when I try text searches for words I know are in my survey source data nothing comes up. I.E. when I want to search for "China", I get zero results, why is that? Any advice or help would be most appreciated! Thanks.
  16. Will NVivo for Mac import classification sheets in Excel format?
  17. I have followed all the instructions on importing/exporting classification sheets (found here: http://help-nv10mac.qsrinternational.com/desktop/procedures/import_%28or_export%29_classification_sheets.htm and here: http://help-nv10mac.qsrinternational.com/desktop/dialogs/using_the_import_classification_sheets_wizard.htm) and can't seem to get it to work. I have tried both a CSV and a TXT file, and both encoding for the TXT file. I have also eliminated all stray characters in my original file so it is only text and numbers. I have also tried lots of titles for hierarchical node names. What am I missing? My project log opens and alerts me that there is an error but it doesn't tell me why it won't import. Please help! Thanks!
  18. I imported a classification sheet from an older project into a newer one. The excel file ended up in the external documents folder. Under the Classification tab, I do see the sheet. It's named Case. Next, I imported a source document, which is a transcription of an interview named Della. I autocoded Della for Cases, a node. All worked well; there are two cases, Audrey and Della, and each had 89 references. Problem: When I look at source document and try to see classification, the attributes are all unassigned. Shouldn't this map to Della's attributes? Thanks, Audrey
  19. I have just imported a spreadsheet which is a classification dataset. Each node is in Column A of the spreadsheet (one node per row), with attribute values in the other columns. Each value in Column A is unique. I then tried to use "Classify Nodes from Dataset", thinking that would create nodes from each of the values in Column A. (I'm new to Version 10, but this had worked just a few minutes before with another classification sheet). However the following message came up: Your action did not succeed due to the following error: Node is not valid What would make a node invalid? I want the node to be created if it's not already there, and I thought this routine would do that. I'm still in set-up mode, so I haven't got any actual coded data that will be messed up when I take up the sensible suggestion that is bound to be posted in response. Thanks - Susan
  20. Dear community, thanks for you help in advance. I have a problem I cant solve - I want to run a query that uses a single node, and looks only in the selected sources that have a particular attribute. For example I want to answer: What is the 'role of evidence in policymaking' (node) according to 'policymakers' (classification attribute on source). (Of course I have many other queries of this nature to run). So I went through these steps (see screenshot attached) 1) Set up a source classification with various attributes (one of them being 'interviewee category' ) 2) Set the 'attribute properties' of internal source documents (eg: policymakers) 3) Ran a query, selecting the node 'role of evidence in policymaking' and looking in 'selected items', opening up the dialogue box and selecting the sources box 4) selected the 'classified items' where 'interviewee category' equals ''policymaker', and click 'find now' 5) ...something goes wrong... nothing gets found, and 'ok' is still greyed out. Note that in stage 4, when it opens the dialogue box the tick on internals becomes unticked automatically (perhaps a source fo the problem?) Anyway, if someone can help me that would be very much appreciated. What am I doing wrong? Best, Roger
  21. I am hoping for some assistance--in NVivo 9, I do not see how to do something that I knew how to do in NVivo 8. I typically identified whole interviews as "Cases" in NVivo 8--e.g., all interviews of doctors as one type of case, all interviews of nurses as another type of case. I do not see how to do that in NVivo 9. 1. The "Classification" feature in NVivo 9 appears to not be a replacement for the Cases feature, because each document can only be classified as one thing. I want to be able to classify documents in two categories*. 2. Brief internet searching** led me to believe that the expectation might be to use nodes for the same purpose. I'm confused about that, though--cases functioned quite differently (e.g. creating a node just codes the whole document as part of that node, but I don't then know how to pull data by an other node for only one document-type...so this seems to not be a replacement feature). How do you recommend that I proceed in order to get the same functionality that Cases gave me (ability to code/classify documents as belonging to a category/document-type, but also ability to have documents be in more than one category; ability to pull nodes by document type (e.g. pull things I've coded as "areas for future research" but only for one grantee))? Thank you! *Explanation: These are documents about grantees. I want to be able to classify/Case the documents by which grantee they are about, and also by document type (annual report, proposal, evaluation, etc). ** See http://help-nv9-en.qsrinternational.com/nv9_help.htm#deep_concepts/key_differences__nvivo_8_to_nvivo_9.htm#MiniTOCBookMark3
