  1. Hi Thanks in advance for any help provided I feel pretty lost in this endevour as NVivo has many, many options and I'm not sure which one I need to take. I have manually produced codes for each of 9 focus group sessions, which I've laid out in 9 separate excel spreadsheets. There were between 6 and 8 of the same people in each focus group. As the example below shows, each spreadsheet is therefore made up of many rows, with each row containing a name, an illustration in the next cell, with the next cell containing the code and then the next one contains a memo/note re' this illustration and the code. So, four items in a row that I need to be able to analyze and which I've now imported. I have created 8 participants (cases) in a new NVivo project and have also imported all 9 spreadsheets with some of the columns being classifying and others being codeable. I have a few questions: 1) I want to be able to code (create nodes) within each of the 9 internal documents so that I can see how the nodes change over the weeks that I conducted the focus groups. (I have done this manually with cardboard so can see there's a 'trend' over the time period and want to be able to see this electronically.) 2) I want to be able to assign a node to one of the cases (person) so that the node is 'linked' to the person who made the comment. Then I can see how the nodes changed over time and how they changed per participant. 3) I noticed that because I haven't linked a node to a case the system is assigning the same node to the same 'source' when this is not the case. If I can assign a node to a case then I won't have this problem I have thought that maybe I can make a new node folder for each of the sessions nodes - so, 9 node folders with codes from each session inside the relevant folder - what do you think of that idea? But it doesn't solve the linking of nodes to cases ..... Thank you very much in advance for your help! Delia
  2. Hello. I have imported 10 pdfs as my source data (internal source) and have gone through each pdf and coded various terms at a node (I have 100 nodes). Is it possible to find out how many times each of the 100 nodes appear across all pdfs? I am looking for something similar to below: Code No. of times code appears across all source pdfs -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. user interface 21 2. technical 17 (codes 3 to 99 excluded to be concise) 100. client 9 I have tried running a Coding Query across all source data and included all codes but it does not give the desired output as above. I have also checked Word Frequency but it does not give you an option to specify the codes to search for across all source data. Is it possible to get the number of times each code appears across all source data?
  3. I have a very long document of data and I'm trying to determine how two of us can determine where the other has stopped coding the data? I keep looking for a symbol that shows in the Source that a area has been coded in the dataset and what node it was coded to. I know that I can use the coding stripes to see the data represented on the side. Yet that doesn't actually correlate back to the data to show me what needs to be done. We realized that we were both doing the same things again and we need to make sure that doesn't happen again. I realize that we could report back and forth on where we start and stop but I can't imagine with the sophistication of the product that it doesn't display what has been coded. Feeling lost, Julie
  4. Is there a way to just look at one set of codes? I have a node folder with 3 nodes in it. I would like to just look at my data that is coded for those nodes and those nodes only so I can further code it. More details: I have coded how students are sharing their ideas and included the teacher's comments/response when available. I would like to pull just the data that I have coded as students sharing ideas so I can further code how the teacher responded. Is this possible? Thanks.
  5. Hi I have been using Nvivo for a short period of time. I have survey data which I have coded it with Nvivo. However, I have got bid of problem when calculating percentages. I will try to explain it as detailed as possible below. 1) I have got survey, which involved 237 children from various schools. 2) In every question I have got different response rates. 92 children responded to the question in the example I am going to use to present problem. 3) 26 out of 92 children gave irrelevant answers. Therefore, 66 children gave code-able answers. 4) I have coded the answers from those 66 children and I have coded 112 references in total. 5) I have coded those 112 references into 23 different categories and I have classified those categories into 3 main thematically categories. At the end it looks like this. Uploaded with ImageShack.us I would like to calculate the percentages of those main categories. My problem starts here. I struggle to find way to calculate that. First of all I would not calculate like number of references X100 / Number of total respondents (92) because more than one answer from one children might have coded in the child categories. For instance to be able to calculate percentage of management issues, I would not say 52X100/92=56% of the children. Because same children might have coded more than one time in the child notes, therefore 56% would not be the correct percentage of children. When I analyse the demographics 52 references in the management issues category recorded from 44 children, 31 references in the health and safety category recorded from 25 children and 29 references in the personal reasons category recorded from 27 children. I would not use these number of children (44-25-27) to calculate percentages because second and third most mentioned categories would change places and it would not be correct. I would not calculate that using number of responses because I do not know how many responses we got. I know 66 children gave relevant responds but some of those mentioned only one issue, while some others mentioned 2 or 3 issues. I would be grateful, enlighten me about what I should do about issue?
  6. Hi folks, I am switching to NVivo 10 part way through my study and am struggling to adapt my clunky "manual" codes to ones that are better suited to use in qualittive software. For example, my old coding scheme used codes such as these: - participating in class (parent code) ----aids learning (child code) ----waste of time (child code) - presenting in class (parent code) ----aids learning (child code) ----waste of time (child code) I understand from some very helpful forum posts that a cleaner way to code in NVivo would be: - participating in class (parent code) - presenting in class (parent code) - usefulness for learning (parent code) ----aids learning (child code) ----waste of time (child code) In theory this second approach should make it easier to make good use of the analytic tools in NVivo. For purposes of this conversation let's imagine some of the codes act as nouns (the act of participating, the act of presenting) while others act as adjectives modifying those nouns (aids learning, does not aid learning). My challenge is this: often sections of source text relate to more than one code. This is challenging when I can no longer tell which "noun" codes are being modified by which "adjective" codes. For instance, a subject might say, "Participating in class and presenting - they're kind of the same, but the first one really helps me learn, where the other is useless." In my old coding scheme, I would have coded that sentence as both particpating in class/aids learning AND presenting in class/waste of time. But in the new coding scheme, I would code it as participating in class AND presenting in class AND aids learning AND waste of time. How will I know which behaviour aids learning and which is a waste of time? This is only one combination of a clash of codes. I have many more. How have others addressed this issue? Is there a better way to structure the coding scheme, or can the software offer a solution? Thank you in advance, Michelle from Vancouver
