  1. I am coding using the drag and drop method in which document text is highlighted and dragged to the node. Highlighting works fine, but I can't establish a pattern of why the dragging intermittently fails about half the time. When it doesn't work, the highlighted text becomes unhighlighted and starts highlighting again where I click the cursor. The best I can tell, unless I click exactly on the black text that is highlighted (not on any whitespace, even it is the space in the "O" of the text), the drag will fail. I find that I can most successfully drag the highlighted text when I click on an "
  2. I have performed a text search with a wild card function, which has produced all instances of the words I needed. However it is bringing up the context of those words as well - I want to code/uncode those words only, without surrounding words. There are hundreds in my search results, so it is not desirable to do each of them individually, and if I do select all, it will code/uncode the surrounding words as well. How do I limit the results to those words only so that when I do a select all it only selects the specific words? Or is there another way to do this? Hope this all makes sense.
  3. I have a recurring issue with coding stripes. I run NVivo 11 on a PC. Coding stripes are often in the wrong place. This causes issues when I am going back to work to double check what I've coded and where, or when I return to work each day. Often the stripes are in the wrong place (a few inches down the screen). I know this is definitely the case because sometimes it happens a few seconds after I've done it, and in any case I can check by clicking on the respective stripe and seeing which part of the text it highlights. Is this a known issue with Nvivo 11? I ha
  4. This might seem like a silly question, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to see what units of my source document I've already coded. I've tried View – Highlight – Coding for All Nodes, but this just highlights everything in my source document. I've also tried View – Highlight – Coding for Selected Items, but this does the same thing. Anyone have any pointers?
  5. I pay attention the coding numbers in the Nodes view to makes sure that me coding is advancing as I intend. So If I have an interview excerpt coded at "X" and the reference is an interview quote from a single participant, when I uncode it at X, I expect to see the reference to decrease by one and perhaps the code (depending of any other part of the interview is coded at X. I have noticed that the tallies of codes and references do not consistently change while coding or uncoding. I have gone back and checked in the node to discover that the coding (or uncoding) did indeed occur. Why don't
  6. Dear all, I have been utilising NVivo for my PhD project which is a study of the rhetoric of the Far Right in Greece and France. I have utilised a number of speeches their MP's have made, and have codified excerpts based on how they frame certain issues. I would like to create a Venn Diagram in order to showcase how their various frames interrelate. For example, part of a speech may talk about the issue of national sovereignty and privatisations. Thus I would have coded the excerpt under these two different nodes (National Sovereignty, Criticising Privatisations). I am aware that Ve
  7. Hi, I have just got the new NVivo 12 and am trying to use the new types of queries. Am I correct in saying that you can only use two attributes for a crosstab query? I have a number of documents which each have 4 attributes. Each attribute has a choice of one, two,or three values. I have then coded some material in each of these documents. What I want to produce is something that looks exactly like my classification sheet, but with an added column which shows how many node / code references there are in a particular document. e.g
  8. Hi In order to further interpret data, I often (ie a few times a day) need to listen to an audio segment that has been coded to a node. When I open a node, two things are provided: (1) hyperlinks to the source audio files and (2) for each source, a list of time stamped audio segments are provided as flat text. Current workflow: remember the start timestamp, click the link to the source audio file, find the right spot in the file (this is aided by the highlighted stripe), listen to the audio. More efficient workflow: see (2) above and make each start timestamp a link to the
  9. Firstly, this is for Nvivo 12. I've just upgraded, unsure if it's the same for Nvivo 11. When I code to a node I'm getting pop-ups telling me: "Coded at: xxxx node". I find them distracting, is there a way to turn these off? I can't figure it out

  11. I mistakingly highlighted the text I selected for coding but clicked to code source button rather than code selection. Is there any way to undo this; does NVivo save my selections too? Can you uncode and will it revert to just the text the selection? Any help with this would be of great help. MB.
  12. I am working on a project where two users are coding the same interviews. I am interested in comparing the text that users selected for each node (code) at the same time. For example, if User A selected the first two sentences of Paragraph A, and User B selected the last 3 sentences of Paragraph A, I want to be able to see both of these text selections side by side. I know that NVivo offers coding stripes, but this does not do a good job showing exactly which words were selected by each user. Highlighting merges both user selections, and I do not think there is a way to customize highligh
  13. I'd like to change a child node to a parent node, taking the references along. Drag and drop doesn't seem to function for me.
  14. When coding transcripts that are attached to audio files (some imported and some created in NVivo), the script in the window jumps around, making it very difficult to move smoothly through the transcript. For example, I'll highlight a sentence and when I release the mouse, the view will jump to a previous point in the transcript. I have to scroll down to see the sentence that I've just highlighted. Then I can right-click and code the sentence, but when I click in the transcript box after coding, the view jumps to another point in the interview and I have to scroll down to continue to code the
  15. Hi, Any advice on how to share coding of a document (currently a source) with a colleague who does not use NVivo. Is there any way of exporting the document, showing the highlighting and node coding, like you can see with 'highlighting' and 'coding stripes' when working on a source? I have managed to export the whole document with highlighting, but no codes, or exporting all the text that is coded but not the names of the nodes they are coded to. Many thanks,
  16. Hej, In terms of setting up my project, I would like to find the best approach. I want to basically establish an actor-place network - who has been where, when and why and what have they generally said. Thus far, I have created a few cases based on persons, now I wanted to created new cases based on organizations, like Harvard University, but I seem to unable to link them, i.e. code one to the other? Do I have to code places as regular nodes?? Best, SCW
  17. Hi Thanks in advance for any help provided I feel pretty lost in this endevour as NVivo has many, many options and I'm not sure which one I need to take. I have manually produced codes for each of 9 focus group sessions, which I've laid out in 9 separate excel spreadsheets. There were between 6 and 8 of the same people in each focus group. As the example below shows, each spreadsheet is therefore made up of many rows, with each row containing a name, an illustration in the next cell, with the next cell containing the code and then the next one contains a memo/note re' this illu
  18. Hello. I have imported 10 pdfs as my source data (internal source) and have gone through each pdf and coded various terms at a node (I have 100 nodes). Is it possible to find out how many times each of the 100 nodes appear across all pdfs? I am looking for something similar to below: Code No. of times code appears across all source pdfs -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. user interface 21 2. technical 17 (codes 3 to 99 excluded to be concise) 1
  19. Hi! New to NVivo, here. I have done some initial coding and have about 10 nodes. Now I want to code those nodes into fewer, broader categories. What is the best way to do that? Thank you in advance! -Yaz
  20. I am trying to code my data to themes so I can see which themes are raised and how often. That is the easy part. However I need to be able to see which of these theme nodes that I have coded to are brought up by various specific denominations of my sources. I have similar and different themes being brought up by various different denominations of my data so thus far I have coded my data to one node per theme, opposed to coding it to one node per theme per denomination of data. To divide up my data into the different denominations I have coded all of my data to at least three nodes (rural or ur
  21. Hello, I would like to some advice on counting the number of references that are coded at a particular node. I know that I can just click on the node and a count will appear for that node, but is there a way to account for cross-coded references? In other words, I would like to know how many references from my source have been coded overall, which I am having difficulty calculating because many references are coded to more than one node, so if I just count up all of the references that are coded at each node, I will inevitably end up double- or triple-counting some references. If my quest
  22. Hello. I have imported the demographics of the interviewees in accordance with the instructions http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/concepts/organize_your_demographic_data.htm#MiniTOCBookMark3 and created case nodes for each of my interviewees as instructed. When I then try to 'Explore, Chart, Coding by attribute' (for example if I want to create a chart of the age spread for a particular node) the result does not show properly - I have attached a screen shot of what comes up with some questions. If anyone could guide me what I may have done wrong I would be very grateful s
  23. When doing some matrix coding I note that the Mac version produces the Node Matrix with rows (respondent attributes) and columns (nodes), however it only supplies the raw data. It would be nice to have the percentages in there like the windows version. Cheers.
  24. I find NVivo's software quirk on drag and drop coding extremely frustrating. This quirk relates to text selection: once a section of text is selected it is intuitive to drag it quickly to the desired code, but in NVivo this doesn't work; instead the selection is dropped and a process of selecting new text begins. It seems that NVivo requires the user to click on the selected text, pause for over 1 second, and then begin the drag motion. This is painful - it doesn't seem like much but it interrupts fast working, especially when selections are dropped. Moreover, it diverges from standard log
  25. Hi, I was wondering if the community can help me understand something. I am trying to finish my thesis which involves a content analysis of a subsample of roughly 104 public comments. I developed a codebook with which myself and a second person can code these comments (codes are the child nodes of the parent node which identifies the variable I am measuring). I want to use Choen's Kappa as a measure of inter-coder reliability and from what I understand, in order to get a coefficient for one node across all sources, I do something similar to the excel sheet found at the bottom of NVivo's F
