  1. Hello everyone, Nvivo provides you great features for dataset analysis. However, there are certain points that you should consider before importing the data: You cannot edit dataset content inside NVivo, so it is important to check and prepare your data before you bring it into NVivo. For example, you might want to check spelling or hide the identify of people or organizations mentioned in survey responses. You cannot change the analysis type and data type of fields (columns) after import, so you should consider how you want to use the fields, before importing the data. For further details please here. Regards,
  2. I installed Nvivo 12 on my iMac (running latest Catalina OS) without i installing Nvivo 10. Everything works fine except for an immediate crash when I press the dataset button or try to import bibliography data. I get an immediate crash before any dialogue window comes up. I read up the forums and discovered I maybe should have uninstalled Nvivo 10 first so have now deleted that. Is there an easy fix or should I uninstall Nvivo 12 and reinstall it again? If so do I have to track down all the install files in libraries and system folders? Has anyone else had this crash scenario? Any help much appreciated.
  3. Hi & good day, I have been collecting data from a public facebook page for my research using the ncapture function. My last data collection was about two weeks ago where the ncapture still able to capture the data as dataset. However, when i try to use the ncapture today, it only has the options of capturing web page as pdf & article as pdf. Please advice. Thank you.
  4. I have a (.xlsx, or .csv) dataset with about 250 respondents, including demographic info and, in one column, full transcripts. Each transcript is about an hour long, and so the viewing format of 100 entries per page is cumbersome. The hour-plus transcripts are also typically in single paragraphs, and so the code-striping seems to stripe the entire cell in the dataset for every applicable code, instead of just the line or two that are relevant. Would you import every row in the dataset as a separate file? If so, would the recommendation be to import them all as documents (.txt or .doc), instead of datasets? Huge thanks. Glad for any advice.
  5. Hello, I have two questions in this post actually, but first background. I have 3 weeks of data which I took off of Twitter. I did a search for a particular hashtag and then collected on a week to week basis all the tweets that included that hashtag. I realized after the fact that I cannot collect these tweets as anything but a PDF file because they are not from the past 2 weeks. I have started going through the tweets one by one and copy and pasting data from the PDF into an excel to make it look like a dataset file taken from twitter. My questions are as follows: 1) is there a way to convert PDF datasets of Tweets into an excel file simply? 2) if not, is there an easier way to transfer the PDF data from the PDF into an excel without having to copy and paste line by line into the excel file?
  6. New to Nvivo 11 completely. I have captured a number of days of Tweets using Ncapture and realized I have overstepped how much I want to analyse. I have imported the data into NVivo 11 using NCapture and just want to delete a few days worth of Tweets, is this possible to do? or will I have to manually go through it and uncode all the tweets that I do not want to analyse?
  7. Hello Could you tell me how I can run a query or report that could give me all the coding (node names and actual references per row) which I applied to a given column/field in the dataset? My dataset looks like this: ID Q1 Q2 Q3 1 text text text 2 The ID is not the participant ID (I didn't think I needed that because I had the line ID), it's the line ID, so when I view my dataset, it allows me to see it in full view, or just view by one ID (form) where answers to all questions under that ID are listed. I coded the data for Q1 and could not find a way to query all coding for that column. I then read that I need to create a case node for each question, which I have done. Is there a way now to do what I need, i.e. run a query or report that could give me all the coding (node names and actual references) which I applied to Q1 in the dataset? Thank you very much in advance!
  8. Hi, I imported dataset from excel file. However, I found that I cannot code selected content of the dataset source, but only code the entire source. Can I code selected content in dataset source? And how, if I can? Many thanks. joseph
  9. Hello I am a real newcomer to NVivo, so appreciate any help! I have imported survey responses from excel (free text) into NViVO and coded them in the source sheet using only nodes so far. As well as the comment there are other text columns to show which course they are on and department- is there a way to get a summary report of which comments have been coded which also includes the other info - course and school? At the moment it is just showing the section of the comment I coded. It would also be useful to get a count of how many people from a department made a certain type of comment etc.. I tried to do a matrix thing but couldn't work it out- is this the best way? OR can I export the dataset with the coding highlighted? When I export you can't see what has been coded and I want to filter out all of the non-coded comments. I will need to give a list of all relevant comments as an appendix but really don't want to have to code them all over again in Excel! Many thanks Jo
  10. Good Day, I've finished an initial coding of my data and now want to narrow the sampling down based on the most interesting groups and responses. For my study I collected 7 images (per person) and have determined that I want to narrow the analysis to 3-4 images and exclude the rest. Along the same lines I also want to narrow down the participants to specific regions (i.e. countries in Asia). So how can I organize my project to begin a second round of coding while narrowing down what I'm coding? I also expect to further narrow this sampling again after this round of coding. I'm thinking I could code the images to new sub-nodes from my first round (but I know that Nvivo doesn't like deep nodes) but how do I separate the images and participants from my current structure yet keep all the coding and references intact? Thanks!
  11. Hello - I ran a text query in a dataset with Spreading = None. When I highlight the results in the text, it highlights just the words in the text search; however, when I look at the results as coding stripes, it includes the entire cell for the dataset entry. Is there any way to show the coding stripes just for the location of the text (these are long text entries and therefore difficult to find in the cells without the coding stripes to help you). Thanks, -Laura
  12. Hi all, Apologies if this is a silly question, but I am new to NVivo and haven't been able to find the answer to my problem through other channels. I have an Excel spreadsheet of survey responses (477 unique respondents, one row for each respondent), with both open-ended (free text) and closed-ended questions. I am importing the open-ended questions as codable fields and understand that I am best to import the closed-ended questions as classifying fields. However, the import wizard in NVivo is automatically assigning some of my closed-ended fields as codable fields and it will not let me change these to classifying. Does anyone know why this is, if I can change it? The closed fields I am having problems with have very long text entries (up to 20 words) and I wonder if this is part of the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks
  13. Hi, I have a dataset with one column and many rows. Each field (or cell) in the dataset contains text that is being coded by two people. I have read the manual and see how to run the comparison query. This apparently compares the nodes based on the number of characters that are selected and added into each node. Instead, I just want to know whether a cell contains any text that has been coded to a node by coder 1 and then compare that to coder 2. In other words, I don't care about the exact text highlighted and added to a node, I just want to know if the field contains any text coded to the node or not, and then compare those. This is hard to explain in writing, but hopefully it makes some sense. Thanks for the help! ___________ Example: Each row of the single column of the dataset represents a survey response. Two coders code are coding for whether the survey response is generally positive or generally negative. I want to see the agreement between coding for positive and negative at the level of the review, not by the exact text selected and coded into the node.
  14. Hi, so far I have seen how we can use NVivo to link survey responses to say interview data from the same set of respondents. I wondered if it was possible to import two sets of survey data from the same set of participants to be analysed in the same project? I'll be more specific - I have a set of survey responses from about 800 respondents, which I have imported into Nvivo and started analysing. I now have a second set of responses to a different set of questions from the same respondents which I would like to add to the same project. I know I can't edit the imported dataset file, but can I import this second set with matching ID numbers for the respondents so that they all relate to the same case IDs for example? I hope my only solution isn't to start all over with a larger dataset!! Any help appreciated, thanks! Regards, Jill
  15. Hi, I'm currently coding a library survey. Most of the fields are closed questions - participants selected an option from a dropdown list. I only have one "Comments" field that's open. I've created nodes and applied them to the comments field, and then auto-coded the closed questions. What I'm trying to do now is to get ALL demographic data (user group, discipline, branch, age, sex) to show up along with all of the comments coded at a certain node (all comments related to "eResources", for example). I need to pass on all the comments related to eResources to my colleagues, who need to see the demographics of the user that made the comments. I can pull up the node view of just eResources, and then track them back to the demographic info by highlighting and clicking "Open Referenced Source" on a right-click. Instead of having to go back to the reference source, Is there a way to include the demographic info from the source alongside each reference in the node view? This seems like nVivo should be able to handle easily, but I've had a heck of a time figuring it out. I've searched around and can only find this: http://forums.qsrinternational.com/index.php?showtopic=4723&hl=%2Bdataset+%2Bcoding#entry13147. It doesn't really help me, as I want demographics for all coded text bits, not just to search for eResources AND a specific demographic. Any assistance would be much appreciated! Thanks, Kathleen
