Job Title

  1. Large project in progress. Many transcribed interviews and currently 2000 nodes! Applied all the optimisation tricks. Upgraded to Windows 10. Increased RAM to 12GB. Occurs on different computer. Basically when I copy and merge nodes (as part of sorting), randomly NVivo10 will stop responding. Sometimes this is with just a couple of small nodes being merged. When NVivo fails/crashes/lags for me, CPU and Memory usage still seem low. Recent error code also included. Anyone else encountered this? Mathew Version = 10.0.638.0 Exception = System.InvalidOperationException Mess
  2. Can someone give me a quick answer on the following question: If I rename a node, and then use the that newly named note when double coding onto a previously coded document, when I go to run a Coding Comparison query, will it work properly? Similar question for if I merge / combine nodes under a new node name (using copy-paste coded references to new node and then deleting the old node) and then attempt to run a Coding Comparison query with a 1) document coded with an the old (pre-merge) codebook and 2) document with the new codebook? Context: My collaborator partiall
  3. Dear all I'm under a deadline, so I hope you could help me out quickly with this question. I'm a newby at Nvivo10, I've looked already into the guidelines but it's very confusing with all the posibilities and boxes you have to check. I've coded all my sources (texts) into nodes and childnodes. The result is a 'nodetree' with main nodes and childnodes etc. Now I want to export the hierarchy of two nodes, with the coded text under it, organised by the hierarchy. To visualise here's what I would like to have: "MAIN NODE" - subnode - subnode * subnode [coded text coded text co
  4. Hi, i have started analysing my interviews (in transcript form) and every time i try open a node to view my codings under that node, it is coming up as an error, telling me ,"the table cell capacity is exceeding in coding file...please update or uncode the file". how can i fix this? i really need to see what quotes i have coded under that node for the different transcripts i have already done!! thanks nvivo problem.docx
  5. Hi Everybody, I am trying to export the specific IDs and references of the text from only the dataset in a specific node only. Please help me understand how to export it as an Excel file. I have tried everything but it only exports HTML. I don't want the references and I don't want the summaries because they do not have the IDs. please help me.Thank you
  6. I was in an overview session recently and one of the participants asked if we could create a mindmap from nodes in the same way we can create nodes from a mindmap. Another individual indicated they were good at generating a node structure but not so good at visualising it so this would be a great tool.
  7. I am an Nvivo newbie, who has just coded all of my interviews (with way too many nodes 450!! which I am now sorting through, organizing hiearchally, finding synonyms, etc) However once I have coded my sources, I can't really see what I have coded where from within the source itself. My coded sections are highlighted, but I don't know how to see which nodes I've coded. I don't find the coding stripes at all helpful, I just want to see a list of the codes I have used on a selection. I've tried exporting to word (I can get my source classifications shown but not the nodes) and printing to
  8. I only recently managed to get acquainted with NVivo. My literature review praxis has thus evolved: As I read through the article, I add the needed quotations to my Nodes (I’ve created, also hear, some thematic Nodes, in reference to the main notions I’m going to use in my research). In this regard, I would have a question. Perhaps some of you can help me. As said, I’m adding all the more interesting references encountered in my readings in my Nodes. So, e.g., I have a node titled ‘Conversion’ where I add all the most interesting quotations from various authors. By opening the Nod
  9. Hi, I'm wondering how to copy codes/nodes from another computer? Apparently this is possible since my previous colleague did this but I do not understand how. I should copy already existing nodes & codes from another computer to my computer. How do I do this? Grateful for all help I can get!
  10. I pay attention the coding numbers in the Nodes view to makes sure that me coding is advancing as I intend. So If I have an interview excerpt coded at "X" and the reference is an interview quote from a single participant, when I uncode it at X, I expect to see the reference to decrease by one and perhaps the code (depending of any other part of the interview is coded at X. I have noticed that the tallies of codes and references do not consistently change while coding or uncoding. I have gone back and checked in the node to discover that the coding (or uncoding) did indeed occur. Why don't
  11. Hi! Is there a way to extract the text and the codes I placed on them so that I can train a machine learning algorithm to do the rest of my coding for me? For example, I have the following text: "Using the system increases my productivity." I coded "system" with the 'technology' node, "using" as an action, and "job" as a task. Now I just need to export the original texts and have some way to track the codes I assigned to words.
  12. Dear NVivo community, I am using NVivo 12 Plus for Windows. What I want to do is an export to Excel (xls; xlsx) which comprises all references per node. This could look like this is done line by line, i.e. each line contains the name of the node, subnode, and the corresponding reference. What is a smart way to do this? guess this must be easy but I have not figured out how to do it yet. Do I have to use "Data Extracts" to do it? Will it possible to make a selection of nodes? Thank you! Dru
  13. I mistakingly highlighted the text I selected for coding but clicked to code source button rather than code selection. Is there any way to undo this; does NVivo save my selections too? Can you uncode and will it revert to just the text the selection? Any help with this would be of great help. MB.
  14. I am working on a project where two users are coding the same interviews. I am interested in comparing the text that users selected for each node (code) at the same time. For example, if User A selected the first two sentences of Paragraph A, and User B selected the last 3 sentences of Paragraph A, I want to be able to see both of these text selections side by side. I know that NVivo offers coding stripes, but this does not do a good job showing exactly which words were selected by each user. Highlighting merges both user selections, and I do not think there is a way to customize highligh
  15. Hello good morning, I am a researcher at the University and I am currently checking the possibilities of the Nvivo software. I am currently conducting a study and I have doubts about how to carry it out, I expose the situation. I have extracted data from a Facebook account by Ncapture with 3 data columns, one with the publications of the brand, another with the likes of the publications and another with the response of the users to these publications. The first step of my study is to categorize only the publications of the brand, this is not a problem, through the frequency
  16. Hello all. I wonder if you can help. I am trying to link sources to case classifications. Under case classifications I have a list of the interviewees with details about their gender and background. I have a number of sources - interviews (sometimes 2 files), notes, etc. The sources are coded but I wanted to run analysis seeing how noding changes depending on gender and background. To do that I'll need to link the sources to each case. How would I do that in such a way I could run an appropriate query? Thanks.
  17. Hi! New to NVivo, here. I have done some initial coding and have about 10 nodes. Now I want to code those nodes into fewer, broader categories. What is the best way to do that? Thank you in advance! -Yaz
  18. I am trying to code my data to themes so I can see which themes are raised and how often. That is the easy part. However I need to be able to see which of these theme nodes that I have coded to are brought up by various specific denominations of my sources. I have similar and different themes being brought up by various different denominations of my data so thus far I have coded my data to one node per theme, opposed to coding it to one node per theme per denomination of data. To divide up my data into the different denominations I have coded all of my data to at least three nodes (rural or ur
  19. Hello, I would like to some advice on counting the number of references that are coded at a particular node. I know that I can just click on the node and a count will appear for that node, but is there a way to account for cross-coded references? In other words, I would like to know how many references from my source have been coded overall, which I am having difficulty calculating because many references are coded to more than one node, so if I just count up all of the references that are coded at each node, I will inevitably end up double- or triple-counting some references. If my quest
  20. Hi, My data involves multiple sources for one person and so I have grouped the sources into cases. I'm hoping to tabulate or chart the percentage of coverage of a select number of different nodes in each of these cases (at present I can only seem to get these percentages for the individual source documents). Many thanks in advance.
  21. Hello everyone! My organization recently purchased Nvivo 11 for qualitatively analyzing our open ended survey responses. I am using the text search query function to create nodes based on pre-established themes for our data. I input the data from an excel spreadsheet that has the following items: respondent id, gender, class year, open ended comment. I have been able to create the nodes based on our themes and export the findings in excel as: id, comment. What I would like to do is export the node with the case classifications as well, similar to how it was imported. My goal is to
  22. Hello, If I have a hierarchy of nodes like so (silly example); 1. Dessert 1.1 Trifle 1.1.1 Sherry trifle 1.2 Ice cream 1.2.1 chocolate ice cream And I code something as being "chocolate ice cream", will it also be coded as "Ice cream" and "Dessert" ? Is this what "aggregate coding from child nodes" does ion node properties. Why is this turned off by default? Thanks in advance, Brian
  23. Dear QSR team, I made the below request about a year ago, but it appears you have not had a chance to implement it, so I thought I'd restate my interest in this new (straightforward) feature: Could you please add a 'node search function' to the toolbar. You already provide this feature, but I have to use a work-around to get there. At the moment, in order to search my nodes I have to use the 'query' tab and then click on 'selected items' and then select 'nodes' to get the option to search all nodes. This is rather time consuming and could probably be fixed quite easily with a 'nodes s
  24. Hello Is there a way of setting the default so that Coverage and References are suppressed when I view a node? I wanted to reduce the amount of text I was copying out for each node. I am having to click these off for each node as I enter them which is a bit of a pain. I wondered if I could just set a default somewhere so that I didnt have to keep manually turning them off. thanks for any ideas Jane
  25. I’m working with a fairly large dataset (300+ respondents for a mixed open- and close-ended response survey). I did some preliminary analysis of themes for the open-ended questions using Excel, just to get things moving. I want to know if there is any way in NVivo to create theme nodes based on what I created in Excel—the alternative seems to be that I need to do ALL of my coding from the start in NVivo, which seems like it will take forever with so many observations. Here are some screen shots of my question; hopefully it makes more sense this way. I did the following in Excel. You ca
