    NVivo 12

    Hi, I have just got the new NVivo 12 and am trying to use the new types of queries. Am I correct in saying that you can only use two attributes for a crosstab query? I have a number of documents which each have 4 attributes. Each attribute has a choice of one,two,or three values. I have then coded some material in each of these documents. What I want to produce is something that looks exactly like my classification sheet, but with an added column which shows how many node / code references there are in a particular document. e.g. Attribute 1 Attribute 2 Attribute 3 Attribute 4 Node 1 number of references Document 1 Value Value Value Value 4 Document 2 Value Value Value Value 7 etc. This could then be filtered according to attributes to quickly see which type of document has the most references to that node. As far as I can see this is not possible. Could you please clarify? I managed to do this in NVivo 11 by doing a coding query and exporting to excel, then exporting the classification sheet to excel and merging them using a VLOOKUP. This wasn't ideal! Thanks Jenni
  2. Hi Team I have three word dictionaries containing several hundred words of different types. I would like to find the frequency of words of each type in a pdf. Is there a way of importing the lists to Nvivo for performing a word frequency query? Thank you.

You'll need to add sources as Rows and Attribute Values as Columns to the Matrix Coding Query.   4. I have a dataset comprising transcripts of interviews with various health professionals (doctors, pharmacists, nurses, etc). I used auto coding to create cases for each speaker, so that the Interviewer is one case and each participant is a separate case. These cases are grouped under a (super?)case based on their role. In other words, there is a (super)case that includes all pharmacists, and sub-cases within for each individual pharmacist. I am trying to run queries, specifically word frequency but potentially any, but only on specific cases. In the instructional video for auto-coding, it said that it would be possible to do this so that the questions themselves wouldn't drive the word frequencies. While I couldn't find a video or specific instructions for how to do this, I intuited that I could choose "Selected Items" instead of "All Sources" and then select only the cases I wanted. I successfully used this approach to limit my queries to specific nodes, but when I tried cases, I ran into trouble. When I ran the query it returned no results. After weeks of trying, I eventually discovered that for one of the (super)cases, which included all the doctors, I could successfully run the query and get results. It worked whether I selected the supercase itself or the sub-cases (each individual doctors). For all other cases, however, the program says that it found no results, which makes no sense for a word frequency search! I cannot figure out why it would only work for these particular cases. I checked the settings for the case folders and they are identical. I also confirmed that the cases actually are indexing the text I intended (specifically what each participant said). And I made sure that all cases in each folder were selected each time. After messing around with settings (in the process turning off the classification and thereby losing all my attributes), I still couldn't get the other cases to work. Then, I imported more transcripts today, and then checked to see if the query would work on the new cases. It did not. In fact, now it isn't working for most of the doctors either. I'm comparing the settings for the cases that work with those that don't, and can't find any difference. Any ideas about what might be going on?
  5. Hello all. I wonder if you can help. I am trying to link sources to case classifications. Under case classifications I have a list of the interviewees with details about their gender and background. I have a number of sources - interviews (sometimes 2 files), notes, etc. The sources are coded but I wanted to run analysis seeing how noding changes depending on gender and background. To do that I'll need to link the sources to each case. How would I do that in such a way I could run an appropriate query? Thanks.
  6. Hi there, I keep getting error messages when trying to open source documents or run queries in a project with a large number of documents (800). Auto coding was used to conduct a preliminary thematic analysis of the content of the documents, this took about 24 hours run. I have tried using a computer with more RAM (32gb) and reducing the number of source documents included in the query (have tried 800 docs, 400 docs, 200 docs), this did not make a difference.     Questions on Queries

    I am in the process of running queries on my interviews (n=30) and I am wanting to compare different groups within the total and what words are driving their thinking. When displaying words it appears the default is 1000. I have attached below two columns from a result which shows the most common word occurring 202 times and the least common - only once. Somewhere down this list the usage becomes irrelevant. I'm trying to determine where this might be. What is a ball park figure for identifying how far down this list an item is still considered significant? For example, does one use 'count' or 'weighted percentage' as the criteria? And secondly, at what point does the word usage cease to be of significance? Is it less than 20 uses or 10? Or is a weighted percentage above 0.15 a cut-off point? In quantitative data, although disputed because values are dependent on the number of items in the scale, Nunnally (1978) recommends a minimum level of .7. for Cronbach alpha. Do we have a similar concept operating here? Hi I've been through all the help files on reports and extracts and queries and tried so many things I just want to know how to return all of the coding at all nodes grouped by cases which have a particular value for one attribute. to clarify with an example, I have several childcare centres in this sample. Their individual names are the different values of the 'centre' attribute. So I want to see all of the coding from the many interview with the staff from each centre organised by centre (to understand data for each centre as a whole). thanks
  9. Hi, I was wondering if the community can help me understand something. I am trying to finish my thesis which involves a content analysis of a subsample of roughly 104 public comments. I developed a codebook with which myself and a second person can code these comments (codes are the child nodes of the parent node which identifies the variable I am measuring). I want to use Choen's Kappa as a measure of inter-coder reliability and from what I understand, in order to get a coefficient for one node across all sources, I do something similar to the excel sheet found at the bottom of NVivo's FAQ here (Also attached). I understand how Cohen's Kappa works mathematically with an example of two coders and two codes. However, I am having trouble understanding what is going on here with the spreadsheet. I just don't want to copy the formulae and placement without understanding what is being done to get an average kappa coefficient. So my question is this: Can someone break down the spreadsheet for me in descriptive terms? Even understanding What Sum EF, TA and TU would be immensely helpful. Pointing to other resources to lead me the right direction would be great too, unfortunately, I don't have any contacts at my university (and it's summer so feedback is nill anyway) that could help.   10. Hi everyone, thanks in advance for your answer(s) This is my current challenge, Lets say I have 3 nodes: node A (50 references), node B (15 references) and node C (10 references). All nodes across several sources. There are overlaps across all three nodes. What I want is a list of references coded under A but there are not coded under B and/or C. I know I can do this by using 'highlight' - this is, opening node A, and highlight node B and C, then all references that are not highlighted are the ones I am looking for. However, I am looking for something (e.g. report/query, etc) I can go back to and keep working on it. Any ideas, thanks Luis
  11. I'm attempting to do a text search via the query menu intending to locate previously added annotations to text. However, despite being able to view the annotations in the text source, my text search queries do not return annotations when I think they should. I am using NVivo 11 Pro and am selecting to run the text search using "All Sources". Any advice would be appreciated.
  12. Hi I use Nvivo 10. Codes: Environment sub codes: Home, School, Society In a source from one participant, there can be double or triple codes. And also there may be more than one references for one code. For example, participant A has 3 references of the code 'Environment-Home'. Source codes: interview, summary, graph I want to count the number of participants that has a specific codes. For example, I want to see how many participants have the code 'Environment-Home'. I want to get the number of participants, not the number of references. I'm sure there is a way to do, but I just can't figure it out. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it.   13. I have been using nVivo for Mac for several months and set up a number of queries in the earlier version. I updated to the new version and I am now trying to add new queries, but every time I do it crashes. It also crashes when I try to run some of the older queries, that used to work.

  15. I am using a Text Search query to analyse essays and want to export and print several of the highlighted essay documents to compare my coding with colleagues. My problem is that the Text Query search highlights words in a dull yellow colour which does not show up well in a print out using a black/white printer. Can the colour which the Text Query search uses for highlighting be changed? Thanks for your advice.
  16. My transcripts appear to have been typed in Word tables. When I run a query and click on the Reference or Text tabs to read through the results, the tables appear and the table text is cut off on the right side. In order to read it, I have to go back to the original source which takes a bit of time. Is there a fix for this?

    Query about queries

    Hello, I am using NVivo for a literature review and have imported 47 PDF sources and coded them according to emerging themes. I would like to generate a matrix that shows me all the sources and the nodes they are coded at. I can do this manually by going to each node and noting the sources on an excel spreadsheet, but I am thinking there must be a way I can generate this in NVivo, given all the data is there. Any help appreciated! Caroline
  18. I have been using NVivo to manage panel data, coding certain passages in interview transcripts for years 1, 2 and 3 of the study. I need to generate a "profile" of a source document in such a way that I can tell which additional nodes were coded in each document's content for year 1, year 2, and year 3. I do not have a sense of how to do this in NVivo 9. I can generate a coding profile by using the Chart feature, and looking at the additional tab behind the generated graph, but I do not then have the ability to filter or sort by the year (or by other nodes). To complicate this, I need to generate multi-dimensional coding profiles for about 600 source documents. So a point-and-click strategy will not be sufficient. If this were a different program, I could write a code loop to pull the info and spit it out... but I do not think there is a "back side" of NVivo where I could write such an export loop. Help?!   19. Hi! I'm new to NVivo but very excited to learn more. I have a quick question today that I hope has a very simple answer. How do I take two query results and generate some sort of comparative data between the two? I am using NVivo 10. For example, I would like to generate word frequency query results from both pre-class essays and post-class essays, and then I would like to see results about the change in word frequencies between the two. Clearly this is something that could be done manually by comparing the two query result pages, or visually by examining the word clouds generated by both inquiries, but is there any way to do this automatically with NVivo and maybe generate mathematical comparisons in the process? Thank you for any insight or advice you may be able to offer.
  20. I have NVIVO version 10, and have just confirmed that I am up to date on the current updates released through the website. I am having a difficult time analyzing my data: I would like to be able to have NVIVO quantify/rank common nodes found when I query for multiple nodes by attribute (For example, looking at participants' responses to several similar questions, seperatly among Black participants and among White participants). I am watching the Tutorial: Exploring your coding. In the video (Screenshot attached), and they refer you to the 'Query wizard' button. I don't have this button in my version (Screenshot attached) I am wondering if me not having this button is a big factor in why I cannot get NVIVO to do the analysis I would like. Also, if anyone is able to tell me how to have NVIVO quantify and rank common nodes found when I query for multiple nodes by attribute, I would really appreciate it.   22. Dear community, thanks for you help in advance. I have a problem I cant solve - I want to run a query that uses a single node, and looks only in the selected sources that have a particular attribute. For example I want to answer: What is the 'role of evidence in policymaking' (node) according to 'policymakers' (classification attribute on source). (Of course I have many other queries of this nature to run). So I went through these steps (see screenshot attached) 1) Set up a source classification with various attributes (one of them being 'interviewee category' ) 2) Set the 'attribute properties' of internal source documents (eg: policymakers) 3) Ran a query, selecting the node 'role of evidence in policymaking' and looking in 'selected items', opening up the dialogue box and selecting the sources box 4) selected the 'classified items' where 'interviewee category' equals ''policymaker', and click 'find now' 5) ...something goes wrong... nothing gets found, and 'ok' is still greyed out. Note that in stage 4, when it opens the dialogue box the tick on internals becomes unticked automatically (perhaps a source fo the problem?) Anyway, if someone can help me that would be very much appreciated. What am I doing wrong? Best, Roger

    Annotations in N10

    I would like to see the annoying content length limitation on annotations removed. I would also like to be able to access (view) the content of ALL annotations in a project in a single output. At present this is only possible (to a limited degree) by generating a very generic text querry which takes a lot of time to run and can crash less powerful systems.
  24. I imported my interviews, all audio files, as internal sources in NVivo. They are now all transcribed and I have used Nodes to code different statements under appropriate topics. Since each interview also represents spokespersons of a particular type, I have given each a source classification. Now, I want to run a query under a particular node (topic) against these source classifications, to collect all quotes from the same type of respondent on one list, but it seems the program only allows queries against node classifications. Please advice. Thank you!
