  1. Hello, all-- I'm using NVivo 12 Plus. I'd like to code data from a spreadsheet with NVivo and then export those codes with their associated case classification as a spreadsheet, preferably with both the name of the code and the coded text. It appears that this would be possible using the Coding Summary by Code Extract and adding the Case.Classification.Name field, but my exports have this field blank. At the moment I have one spreadsheet with the first column in the spreadsheet stored as a Case Classification. Is it possible to create an extract that would associate the Case Classification with the codes using spreadsheet data? If not spreadsheet data, would it be possible for individual files, like .pdfs or .docx documents? I'm willing to consider other workarounds, as well, but I do need to get the data out of NVivo because I'll need it for multivariate analyses. You can see the blank classification field below:
  2. Hi everyone, Our project involves qualitative coding of 6 open-ended questions at the end of a long survey of quantitative fields. There are >200 columns of quantitative data in the spreadsheet that we want to keep for attributes (e.g. demographic info) and to crosstab by later on in matrices. There are hundreds of observations in this dataset, which was imported from an Excel spreadsheet. Trying to code the open-response fields in this large spreadsheet is very laggy and we're looking for better solutions. Would it be possible to keep the quantitative attributes in a separate imported file from the coded fields and merge the sources by a linking ID number after the coding is done? Or, I know it's possible to have each observation as its own source and use the spreadsheet as a classification table not to be coded - but then would each of the hundreds of sources/observations have to be manually linked to each row in the classification table? If so, that also sounds too time-intensive to be feasible. Are there any workarounds that you know of? What would your recommendations be? Thanks in advance!
  3. Hi, I have free answers to 8 questions from 35 participants. I have added and coded each question as a source with the participant number next to each answer in every spreadsheet. What I want to do now is to export the nodes for each participant to spss. When I try to run the matrix code I get the matrix coded for all the participant in each source, but what I need to do is to compare participants between the questions, if that makes sense. Essentially a quantification of the stripes that appear in NVIVO in an SPSS or Exel format. Is this possible? Thank you in advance
  4. I imported an excel datasheet that has both node classification data as well as codable, narrative fields. I would like to keep adding to this datasheet. After importing, the "layout" ribbon has "add rows". But it is greyed out and not usable. How does one make a table in an internal to add rows, or, simply edit an imported datasheet? The function is there, so clearly it does something.
  5. As far as I can tell, there is no capacity in NVIVO for Mac to import and code spreadsheets. This is a major limitation that I would like to see addressed. Much of the data I glean from other sources and the data I organize from my own research is in spreadsheet format, and I would like to be able to select cells, rows, columns, and other sections to code.
  6. Good Day, I've been trying to get my data analysis in gear but cannot get beyond an issue when importing my dataset (from surveys) into NV. My survey has been complied into one Excel file (.xlsx) and I've cleaned the columns as best I can given the responses from participants (deleting spaces, capitalizing lower cases for proper nouns, spelling etc.). When I import into NV here is what I do and the problems I'm encountering: External data> dataset> Import wizard All columns are selected as classifying fields except the last 4 (net use, drawing, website, TV) This is the 1st issue: the column that contains values for hours(net use) to 1 decimal place is NOT readable by NV as a classifying field citing the numbers are off somehow) complete import I create a classifying node named "participants" I select the data set and chose "classify nodes from dataset"> nodes are populated the 2nd issue is when viewing the demographic info, everything looks good when I click and chose "visualize>chart nodes by attribute value" I get the proper numbers and % of age, language, job, education etc. BUT when I try to get info on COUNTRY the "other" category is full of 80 occurrences, this includes 11 references of "Malaysia" as well as references of Thailand and China (all spelt correctly, same format (text) same font, size etc.) This also happens with the RESIDENCE column which has cities and states listed and shows 147 instances of "OTHER" I've tried saving as different file formats checked the Excel file for variations but cannot locate the source of this error and find it very frustrating that NV can't distinguish these are the same words. The only other info I have uploaded to my project are 1700 images, after seeing the error above I deleted my data set and the subsequent nodes I got from auto coding for those 4 codeable fields listed above. I certainly don't want to upload ALL 1700 of them again since NV has no proper drag and drop and files have to be selected again & again using 'browse'(although losing days of work seems to be the norm with NV). I would really appreciate some advice or if someone could identify what the problem is or what I'm doing wrong here so I can proceed with figuring out this cumbersome program. As mentioned elsewhere on these forums the ability to edit datasets after import is crucial especially for a program designed to handle large sets of data which of course will turn up a few mistakes in the process and need correction without having to begin again from the start. Thanks! SURVEY DATA3.xlsx
  7. Having watched this video that explains how to import datasets into Nvivo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWBUH-hCAEY), I still can't manage to import my chosen dataset. I have an excel spreadsheet containing a forecast for a product demand in different countries. So my column A is UK, Germany, France, and Denmark, and the headings for Column B, C, D, E, etc are 1990, 1991, 1992, etc until 2020. The content of the spreadsheet is just numbers. Now I want to create a relational database where the demand in Germany in 1993 will return that specific value from the spreadsheet. I imported my dataset, and nothing is created automatically, I have difficulties making the nodes, and somehow I made a classification instead of actually making a node. Some cells are white, some grey, I don't know which cells should be white and which ones should be grey. I don't know how to actually create my nodes automatically. Could you please help me with some steps I could follow, or tell me if what I am trying to achieve is actually doable in Nvivo? I would really appreciate your help. I might not have explained my issues very clearly, so do please tell me if I should explain myself better. Thank you ioana
  8. Hi I am very very new to Nvivo10 and I am trying to chart results from a spreadsheet. I have imported the spreadsheet, which consists of information on workshops, locations, trainers etc. then constructed nodes from the columns of data, But I admit I am confused as to the classification set up. I have constructed some classification nodes for persons and location. Now when I do a matrix query I keep getting 0 results. Can anyone help please.
  9. Hello, I have been maintaining several spreadsheets in Excel because they are capturing qualitative data about ongoing events and my understanding is that I cannot edit a spreadsheet once it has been imported into NVivo. However, I would like to use NVivo for this purpose so that I can start coding the data and linking it to other sources. I note that Framework matrices are editable. Is there any reason why I shouldn't use them for the initial data entry rather than Excel providing they are clearly labeled and separated from the Framework analysis I plan to do across all my data? Thank you, Abby
