Problems Installing SQL on Windows 2000 SP4

Recommended Posts

Some users have reported a specific issue when trying to install NVivo 7 on a Windows 2000 Professional SP4 platform.

It appears that in some cases, installing the SQL Server Express 2005 component separately resolves this issue. Here are some further tips - but only complete the following if you are on Windows 2000 Professional SP4, and you have tried all of the suggestions in the other topic on installing SQL Server Express on this forum. The below steps really should be a "last resort".

Instructions for installing SQL Server Express 2005 manually

1. Ensure that your system is up to date. This can be achieved by visiting Microsoft Windows Update and selecting ALL available updates, not only the critical ones. This may require several visits to the site, as some updates cannot be installed until others have occurred. Keep going to the site until it explicitly says there are no more updates.

2. Restart the computer.

3. Attempt to install NVivo 7 again. If the install still fails, then proceed to step 4

4. Ensure NVivo 7 and ALL SQL Server Express 2005 components are uninstalled. (Be careful not to uninstall other SQL products that are not part of SQL Server Express 2005 as this may adversely affect other software programs on your system).

5. Download SQL Express installer from Microsoft’s web site here

6. Run the SQL Express Installer.

7. When the installer gets to the “Registration Information” screen, ensure that the "Hide advanced configuration options" check box is de-selected.

8. ON the Feature Selection screen use defaults.

9. When the installer asks for the Instance Name, instead of SQLExpress, replace it with QSRNVIVO.

10. When the installer asks for a service account, specify Local System from the drop down.

11. On the Authentication Mode screen ensure that Windows Authentication is selected.

12. ON the Collation Settings screen, select Latin1_General from the dropdown list and ensure the Binary checkbox is ticked.

13. On the User Instances screen ensure the Enable User Instances checkbox is ticked.

14. Install with the rest of the defaults.

15. If the SQL Express is successful, run the NVivo 7 installer.

I did follow the steps below but during the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 setup. THe llowing messge shows up:

The SQL server system configuration checker connot be executed due to WMI configutation to the machine BACIGALUPE erro: 2147749896 (0x80041008)

Please help. The same error message appears when I try to configure using the N7 CD. Thanks!
