Connecting attributes to coded data?

Can't figure out what I'm doing...any help appreciated.

I have uploaded 2 datasets from excel.  Both contain different data for about 600 people.  Both excel files have a respondent ID number in the first column.  When I imported them as datasets they showed up in "files."  I started creating codes and have coded several hundred pieces of text.  I wanted to run a query to see if anything was starting to show up...out of curiosity…and to make sure I still remembered how NVivo worked after 10 years away.  

How do I run a query by attributes?  ID number/Sex/Age/Etc.  I did not make those columns “codable.”  Everything I read says to create attributes…which then sends me to “cases.”  I didn’t create cases since everything was in an excel doc.  Column 1 is an ID number and the data in following columns is attached to that person.  Have I gone wrong somewhere?

You would need to create cases and case classifications in order to perform queries over case attributes.
