I've just sent in an email to get some help but thought I'd post just in case someone is out there today who can help me.

I recently bought the student semester edition of NVivo 8 and spent two days in QSR training last week where I had an opportunity to start up my own project. I'm now trying to open my project created during the course on my laptop (which uses Vista) and it won't open, stating:

NVivo 8 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the problem and notify you if a solution is available.

I am stressing out about this because I need to open my project and start working on it. Sue (the trainer) set it up for me so that I've got all of my data linked cases and their attributes and I can't start again. Also just to mention, NVivo itself will open fine, including the set volunteer project, but it won't open my project I created in the class (after saving it at the end of the day Friday I opened it up again and it saved and worked fine).

Please help me!!

The error log says:

Version = 8.0.332.0

Exception = System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException

Message = Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.

FullText = System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> g6: Failed to attach to database. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: SQL Server detected a logical consistency-based I/O error: incorrect checksum (expected: 0xb67b2799; actual: 0x673e662d). Additional messages in the SQL Server error log or system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online.

Hi Linda & Jeff,

Errors of this nature are best dealt directly with QSR Support.

Please send an email to support@qsrinternational.com containing any error logs that have been generated.

Error logs are usually located in your My Documents/Documents folder and are named like ‘err<date>T<time>.log’.

Kind regards,

Mark

I'm wondering if the problems some of you are having (not being able to interpret the error file, this is a guess) are because you tried to copy a project file via Windows while the file was open in NVivo.

There are only two ways to saftely copy an NVivo project file:

1) after you have closed it, copy it via Windows explorer

2) while you are in the project, choose File > Copy Project, making sure you have saved everything first (NVivo then closes, copies and reopens the project for you).

On another, related note: Never ever work off an E drive on a desktop computer if you can possibly manage it - if you have a blackout (sudden loss of electric power), your project is likely to be corrupted and irretrievable.

Hi Pat

I think that could very well have been what caused my problem. I was working from my memory stick while in the NVivo workshop as I didn't want to save it on the class computer. Lesson learned! I now religiously save, then copy project and rename, then copy my backup to my memory stick/s.

Hi Yansel,

There are several reasons why a user may experience these errors so these cases are best dealt directly with QSR Support.

Please send an email to support@qsrinternational.com and include any error logs NVivo may have generated.

Error logs are usually located in your My Documents folder and are named like ‘err<date>T<time>.log’.

Please be sure to mention this forum posting in your email.

Kind regards,

Mark
