Messy coding - anyone else

Recommended Posts

I've been a researcher for a number of years and I think that there is some level of mystique that surrounds qualitative research. Even as a qualitative researcher I have never seen anyone else's unpublished coding framework.

So what I'm wondering is:

Are people's list of themes REALLY as neat as is made out in the papers I read? e.g. 'Four themes were identified incorporating several subthemes'

In reality I've usually got a lot of overlapping stuff, queries over some data that I'd like to follow up in future interviews/research.
