Best way to import paper/handwritten survey and journal/essay data

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I understand that NVivo can easily upload PDFs which means that I should be able to scan student journals and essays into my project as data. Is that the best way to do this?

My other question is how to import survey data. Some of the questionnaire data was collected in paper/handwritten form and includes likest-scale responses and more (demographic questions, open-ended questions). Instead of scanning the survey, should I pass the data over to EXCEL in order to have the column organization? I am trying to wrap my head around the most efficient way to have my data imported for coding.

Lastly, will I be able to search for a particular data set of interview transcriptions, journals and questionnaires for a single student or will I only be able to sort by the Type (journal, interview transcription, survey, etc.)?

Thank you very much for helping me get this project started.

Hi Sandra, you can import the PDF file containing the scanned documents. However, the PDF may only contain images of the document and you will only be able to do region coding. If you are able to make the text in the scanned document selectable before importing the file to NVivo, you can code the text on the document.  See this link: https://help-nv.qsrinternational.com/12/win/v12.1.101-d3ea61/Content/files/documents-and-pdfs.htm

Please check out the following link which explains how to work with datasets in NVivo: https://help-nv.qsrinternational.com/12/win/v12.1.101-d3ea61/Content/files/datasets.htm

The way your data is classified and coded will determine if NVivo will be able to relate them when running queries.  Most queries usually look for intersecting coding among project items.  Please refer to the following link for more information about queries: https://help-nv.qsrinternational.com/12/win/v12.1.101-d3ea61/Content/queries/queries.htm
