How to find which similar words did Nvivo choose in text search query

Recommended Posts

I am doing an initial text search about "gender" scrolling the find button to "with generalizations". However, the summary tab is not showing me which words has Nvivo decided to include in this search (columns include only "name", "in folder", "references" and "coverage"). I would like to get a list of words that Nvivo used but I have no idea where to find something like that...

Hello @cgi,

On text search query results preview, you can see found words as bolded in reference tab which is located on the top right.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Hi canarik, Thanks for your answer, but I probably have a different version? In text query I get four tabs on the right (not the top); the first is summary (which in theory should have a column with the similar words - you do get them for "word frequency"). The second tab is "reference"; in this one, the words are black instead of grey and it does show a few words FOUND that could be related to your search - not the easiest way of finding out which words were found in the text. It would be great to know which words did nvivo SEARCH for (even if it didn't find them), to try to understand the logic, and run a separate query for missing words. In my "gender" example, Nvivo seemed to have found "sex" and "female", but apparently it didn't even look for women (or maybe it did? no idea).

I suppose Nvivo just doesn't have that functionality, but thanks anyway...

Cheers,

Cgi

Hello again @cgi,

Yes I meant the same reference tab.

I agree that ability of coding each related word would be great. Please submit a feature request from here: https://nvivo.canny.io/

Located results depend on related word algorithm of Nvivo's linguistic engine. I do agree that women and men should be listed in generalizations. Please submit a feature request from here: https://nvivo.canny.io/

Hope this helps,

Hi cgi,  the tabs in the Text Search query results only show the results of the search and not necessarily the words that were used in the search.

Check out this link (the logic applies to NVivo 12) which explains how text match settings are used in NVivo: http://help-nv11.qsrinternational.com/desktop/deep_concepts/understand_text_match_settings.htm

NVivo uses the WordNet lexical database for text-related searches. This link contains more information: http://wordnet.princeton.edu/
