Associating coded References to Cases (as well as Codes and Files)

Recommended Posts

Dear All, how're things?

I have data relating to 80 individual Cases.

Each case has a set of related quantitative and categorical data in a spreadsheet that I have imported as Case Classifications.

Each case will have one or more PDF Files providing a narrative description related to the case.

I will work through the PDF Files and code relevant (to me) themes (References) to a coding schema, creating Codes in NVivo.

I would like to be able to cross-tabulate the results, including exploring the relationships between the Codes and the Case Classifications.

The coded References will be automatically associated with their related Code and their source File.

What is the best way to ensure that the coded References are also associated with their relevant Case?

For each imported file, should I just code the entire contents to the Case that it belongs to?  Or is there an alternative/better approach?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Regards, Stuart Palmer.

Hello @Stuart Palmer,

If your research has multiple files for the same case the best strategy is to assign all files to same classification and use attribute(s) to assign desired relation value.

I hope this helps,

Hello @RHU_Mach,

Could you please elaborate on your question?

I would like to know if there is a way of outputting my references (quotes) - ordered by node, with the case number, gender and job role of the person that said it?

I have 15 cases (2 files) and the references are all associated correctly ie. I can see all of the references attributed to a single case, but I don't want this, I want the references grouped by node, and to be able to see which person said it.

To extract the references I have tried this by using reports but I could not see how to get the participant/ case attributes to show for each reference.

I found a much easier way to extract the references was to highlight the nodes I wanted, right click and extract (choosing the References option which creates Word documents for each node).

It would be really great if you have a solution as it seems such as basic thing for qualitative work but I can't see how to do it.

[NB my original question was asking whether you can change the variable or column that NVIVO has selected as the key (unique identifier) of your records. This was because I was trying to show that my cases were linked across different files. I don't need this now as I worked out how to code references to cases manually]

Hello @RHU_Mach,

You can use Framework Matrices for that.

Please refer here.
